Description
GCIs Facilities Engineer III is responsible for providing rapid and accurate information about the design and safe installation of AC and DC power systems power distribution battery backup systems and cabling systems in support of telecommunications systems. Support engineering and operations teams in their effort to maintain and upgrade HVACs Generators UPS units Grounding networks Rectifiers and Inverters. Ensure adherence to Central Office Engineering and Installation Standards to ensure efficient space utilization and properly installed facility cable tray racks auxiliary support iron work and earthquake bracing.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AT ALL LEVELS:
  • Participate in the implementation of new installations upgrades and/or changes to existing company facilities.
  • Review and finalize detailed cost estimates designs material lists installation packages and test and maintenance procedures.
  • Design and specify installation methods.
  • Provide engineering technical support troubleshooting and repair recommendations.
  • Provide cost control and cost savings.
  • Mentor junior engineers and stay current with applicable codes & developing technology.

    • Knowledge of typical industry standard documentation and design criteria with progressive experience in the installation of Central Office systems.
    • Knowledge of the Bell Core/Telcordia IEEE and NEBS compliance standards building codes fire codes and telephony power system standards.
    • Basic working knowledge of electrical/electronic systems so that detailed technical problems are dealt with in a logical manner.
    • Engineering analytical skills for calculating evaluating comparing interpreting and organizing telecommunication infrastructure and system installation projects to design and build highly reliable facilities infrastructure.
    • General knowledge of telecommunications facility installation for Transport Internet Microwave Cellular Satellite LAN/WAN Switch and customer premise equipment.
    • Knowledge of the following facilities and equipment: satellite earth stations including Microwave and VSAT Central Office infrastructure and support equipment Central Office Transport Power and Grounding equipment DACS systems fiber optic SONET systems highspeed distributed data network equipment and installation.
    • Knowledge of the proper use of trade hand and power tools.
  • SAFETY & SECURITY Supports a safe work environment by following all workplace safety rules and guidelines; complies with applicable Security policies and procedures.
  • Proficient computer skills (Visio AutoCAD Acrobat) and MS Office knowledge (e.g. Outlook Teams Word Excel) to complete job duties effectively.

Additional Job Requirements:

This is a senior level engineering position requiring the performance of highly complex and diverse duties under deadlines and operating constraints. Requires independent engineering decisionmaking and the ability to provide detailed technical direction to others. Reviews and provides final engineering design specifications and service requirements. Requires ability to function in the role of Project Engineer for large projects including coordinating directing assisting and providing technical direction to junior engineers and supporting technicians. Actively participates in the implementation of new installations and upgrades or changes to existing facilities by reviewing editing and creating Installation packages performing preinstallation reviews documenting new and existing installations and performing installation package quality assurance standards adherence.

Essential Duties:

Prepare detailed cost estimates designs material lists installation packages and test and maintenance procedures resulting in completely documented facilities based on industry standards. Design and Specify installation methods materials and layouts for cable racks Cable tray runways lighting floor and rack layout M&C equipment HVAC Backup battery Backup generator UPS Inverter AC and DC power systems and distribution for various local and geographically remote telecommunications Central Office Internet Microwave Cellular Satellite Transport LAN/WAN Switch and customer premise facilities including commercial building power distributions and central office grounding systems.Assist the project engineers in defining requirements to complete the installation documentation package ensuring this information is available for and followed by installation personnel. Maintain site specific information on space and infrastructure.Provide installation engineering technical support to engineering installation and operations personnel including troubleshooting and repair recommendations.Produce estimates of installation labor time and materials coordination of materials and supplies ordering and site installation support.Assist with the development and creation of companywide installation guides techniques and equipment specifications.

Additional Competencies:

  • Must have advanced knowledge of all aspects of telephony power and power distribution systems for central offices customer premises wire centers and remote village earth stations.
  • Comprehensive understanding of telecommunications operations and functions.
  • Remains current on technical advances in the field of telephony central office equipment installation engineering and DC and AC power systems.
  • Experience in telecommunications Central Office design and installation quality assurance and standards concepts.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required: *A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a yearforyear basis

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering Mathematics Physics Telecommunications or related field. *
  • Minimum ofsix (6) years as a Telecommunications Technician Field Engineer Project Manager or related background. *

Preferred:

  • Professional Engineering License (PE)
  • Telecommunications experience.
  • Relevant telecom industry or job specific certifications.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position requires driving a companyowned vehicle company provided vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the company. Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license proof of insurance a satisfactory driving record and successfully complete Defensive Driving course. Must be able to drive when in remote communities and operate ATVstyle vehicles if necessary.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • 75% office based.
  • 25% travel to remote locations and afterhours work requiring flexible schedules late night or early morning cutover support.
  • Work is primarily sedentary requiring daily routine computer usage.
  • Ability to work shifts as assigned work in standard office/home office setting and operate standard office equipment.
  • Travel in rural Alaska and some outside work required.
  • Must be able to occasionally work in cramped spaces and at heights primarily inside and outside of remote company and customer facilities.
  • Ability to tolerate temperature and weather extremes (fumes and odors dust low light conditions intermittent weather).
  • Ability to accurately communicate information and ideas to others effectively.
  • Physical agility and effort sufficient to perform job duties safely and effectively.
  • Ability to make valid judgments and decisions.
  • Available to work additional time on weekends holidays before or after normal work hours when necessary.
  • Must work well in a team environment and be able to work with a diverse group of people and customers.
  • Virtual workers must comply with remote work policies and agreements.

Possess proven skills and knowledge in the design and construction of AC power and ground systems and building HVAC systems for telecommunications with DC power systems DC power distribution systems VRLA and VLA battery systems telecommunications equipment rack and cable tray systems UPS systems inverter power systems. Possess proven skills and knowledge in the design of telco ground systems and lightning protection systems. Have a working knowledge of the effects of natural factors such as erosion corrosion wind temperature humidity and water on telecommunications systems and telecommunications infrastructure. Be familiar with construction codes and standards applicable to the construction of occupied and unoccupied telecommunications facilities in the State of Alaska.
