Job Description

Overview

At Houston Methodist the Speech Pathologist (SP) Clinical Consultant position is responsible for functioning as a licensed speech language pathologist and provides all aspects of patient care including diagnosis treatment and consultation while maintaining and promoting the health of the patient. This position evaluates and develops the therapy plan of care for a broad range of diagnoses and acuities on an outpatient basis. As an experienced Therapist the SP Clinical Consultant position provides education to patients patients family members and collaborates with other health care professionals as needed for problem resolution and/or achievement of identified patientspecific goals. This position assists with development of best practices and process improvement initiatives as designated.

Responsibilities

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides consultative speechlanguage services using active listening and teaching in a clinic environment across a broad range of diagnosis and acuities to identify patients level of function. Assists in providing services to complex patient populations.
  • Utilizes strong knowledge base serving as a resource to colleagues in teaching best therapy practice. Serves as speech subject matter expert and provides clinical resource expertise to clinic staff and providers.
  • Collaborates to foster healthy relationships in the work environment such as mitigation of conflict. Uses peertopeer accountability towards improvement of department score for employee engagement.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develops the plan of care and treatment plan based on evaluation findings and implements the speech therapy treatment plan.
  • Provides education and training of techniques to patients and families for continuation and effectiveness of therapy when away from clinic. Refers established patients to physician if evaluation deems treatment requires additional medical evaluation or procedures.
  • Provides review and evaluation services for physicians patients before clinic sets appointments for physicians to evaluate.
  • Initiates improvements for department score on patient satisfaction through peertopeer accountability to service standards.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assesses patients in a clinical setting monitors progress towards treatment goals modifies goals and plan or program. Recognizes complications/limitations associated with certain procedures and proactively addresses such for optimum outcomes.
  • Leads and identifies opportunities for practice changes and performance improvement by providing recommendations. Assists in development of treatment protocols and best practice for certain population.
  • Role models highly developed assessment clinical documentation leadership and analytical skills; integrates and contributes to professional practice standards policies procedures protocols and leads improvements in patient safetyrelated processes.
  • Determines appropriate workload level to provide effective care of patients and meet clinical targets. Contributes to meeting department and clinic targets for quality and safety.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains accurate and complete documentation of patient education and procedures performed in a timely manner in the patient record. Enters accurate charges for services provided.
  • Models independent time management effectively and prioritization of daily tasks for self. May assist with assigned tasks such as charge development or reconciliations as applicable.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Utilizes research in specialty area to develop appropriate treatment plans for patients. Keeps abreast of advances in other specialty areas that could impact patient evaluation and treatment
  • Seeks opportunities to specialize and/or expand learning with a focus on continual development as a Speech Language Pathologist. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an ongoing basis.

Qualifications

EDUCATION
  • Graduate of education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications Licenses and Registrations section.

WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Three years of experience as a Speech Language Pathologist

License/Certification

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED
  • SLP Speech Language Pathologist State Licensure within 90 days OR
  • SLPTemp Speech Language Pathologist Temporary State Licensure within 90 days AND
  • ASHACCCSLP AHSACertified Clinical Competence in SpeechLanguage Pathology AND
  • BLS Basic Life Support (AHA)

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job determined through ongoing skills competency assessments and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking reading and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients physicians family members and coworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Ability to work independently capable of handling challenging/difficult therapy procedures and patient care situations; demonstrates sound judgment and executes experienced clinical skills.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal teamwork and leadership skills with all levels of the healthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer service to all patients visitors physicians and coworkers
  • Possesses proficient computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systems and standard Rehabilitation equipment.
  • Demonstrate professional and technical competence in the selection evaluation utilization of treatment plans for increasingly complex patient populations.
