About the role

Were seeking experienced Policy Communications Managers to drive communications strategies for Anthropics policy research and societal impacts initiatives. As a Policy Communications manager you will work with policy research product legal and external affairs to educate press and policy makers about our policies products programs research and principles. The ideal candidates will be experienced media handlers who are equally comfortable driving proactive creative communications strategies as dealing with reactive issues. We are looking for people who thrive working in fast paced environments who have the ability to move fast think critically and work collaboratively on complex issues. A deep understanding of the US media environment the technology sector and Anthropics varied audiences is key.

Key focus areas

Policy communications is a lean highimpact team at Anthropic. Depending on the specific role you may focus on one or more of these critical areas alongside other issues:

State and local policy SF

• Drive proactive and reactive communications strategies for state and citylevel AI policy initiatives and stakeholder engagement
• Working with the policy team build programs and strategies that help to engage state and local officials policy organizations trade associations and community stakeholders
• Develop substantive narratives and messaging that support responsible AI implementation at the local level.

National security SF DC NYC or Seattle

• Drive proactive and reactive communications strategies around AI issues of national security
• Build relationships with relevant security and defense journalists
• Working with policy and legal to translate complex technical concepts for relevant audiences

Societal impacts and research SF DC NYC or Seattle

• Drive creative proactive communications strategies around the work of Anthropics societal impacts research team
• Develop substantive materials that enable education and conversation around the economic and societal impacts of AI systems
• Work closely with the research and editorial teams to manage policy communications considerations around forthcoming publications and launches

Responsibilities:

• Develop and execute proactive communications strategies that effectively communicate our policy positions products and research to key stakeholders
• Effectively manage reactive inbound media requests
• Partner cross functionally with the policy legal research and product teams to prepare for major company announcements and product launches and to handle inbound media requests
• Build strong relationships with journalists and relevant influencers
• Orchestrate and write company blog posts and other communications materials.
• Manage executive interviews and speaking engagements
• Lead rapid response communications for sensitive issues
• Build understanding around Anthropics mission

You may be a good fit if you:

• Have 8 years of experience in policy communications ideally in technology or research sectors
• Possess deep understanding of the technology and AI policy landscape and key stakeholders
• Want to be part of a fastpaced small experienced and impactful team
• Enjoy and are excellent at media relations and have a strong interest in less mainstream media
• Are a superb written and verbal communicator
• Enjoy working crossfunctionally with a range of technical and nontechnical teams
• Are excited to translate insights about AI for broader audiences
• Are resultsoriented and high agency with a bias towards flexibility and impact
• Care about ensuring that transformative AI systems are developed safely

Logistics

Education requirements: We require at least a Bachelors degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

Locationbased hybrid policy: Currently we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However some roles may require more time in our offices.

Visa sponsorship:We do sponsor visas! However we arent able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.

We believe that the highestimpact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few largescale research efforts. And we value impact advancing our longterm goals of steerable trustworthy AI rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. Were an extremely collaborative group and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highestimpact work at any given time. As such we greatly value communication skills.
