The purpose of this examination is to establish an Instructional AssistantSpecial Education eligibility list for a current vacancy (nonbilingual) at 5.0 hours per day and to establish an Instructional AssistantExtensive Support Needs (nonbilingual) eligibility list for four vacancies (nonbilingual) ranging from 5.56.0 hours per day along with future vacancies occurring during the next 12 months.

INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANTSPECIAL EDUCATION BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a Principal or Designee assist in providing instruction to individual or small groups of learning emotionally mentally and physically handicapped children in the RSP or SDC program; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; perform a variety of clerical duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:Tutor individual or small groups of students with learning disabilities reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher;monitor and oversee student drills practices and assignments in various subjects; collect data and/or work samples as instructed by the teacher.
Assemble and prepare lessons instructional materials and homework for individual students as directed by the teacher; maintain daily records of achievement and attendance.
Observe and refocus behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
Read books and other materials to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned; assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition as required; assist students with spelling and writing exercises and assignments.
Perform a variety of clerical duties such as making telephone calls preparing and duplicating instructional materials; maintain various records and files related to students instructional activities and assigned duties; assist with recording grades taking student attendance and maintaining related records as required.
Confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet individual student needs; provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas displays and exhibits operating audiovisual equipment operating instructional equipment and distributing and collecting paper and supplies.
Ensure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; assist with maintaining classroom in a clean and orderly condition.
Attend school functions staff and other meetings and professional development programs as assigned.
Assist with creating and assembling bulletin boards.
Assist with supervising students during library recess and lunch activities; monitor and oversee playground activities physical education and field trips as assigned; make home visits according to established procedures as directed.
Encourage and maintain a positive and supportive learning environment for students.
OTHER DUTIES:
Perform related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANTSPECIAL EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years experience in working with schoolage children in an organized setting.
Completed at least 48 semester units of study at an institution of higher education (college level)
OR
Obtained an associates (or higher) degree
OR
Met (pass) an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading writing and mathematics OR reading writing and mathematics readiness.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANTEXTENSIVE SUPPORT NEEDS:
Graduation from High School or its equivalent. Complete at least two years of study at an institute of higher education; or obtain an associates (or higher) degree; or pass the Districts assessment examination.INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANTSPECIAL EDUCATION
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Special needs issues and requirements of students with learning disabilities.
Basic subjects taught in District schools including mathematic grammar spelling language and reading.
Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
Correct English usage grammar spelling punctuation and vocabulary.
Reading and writing communication skills.
Interpersonal relations skills using tact patience and courtesy.
Basic recordkeeping techniques.
Classroom procedures and conduct.
ABILITY TO:
Assist certificated staff with instruction and related activities for learning handicapped students.
Perform clerical duties such as filing duplicating and maintaining routine records.
Print and write legibly.
Make mathematic calculations quickly and accurately.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Learn the procedures functions and limitations of assigned duties.
Communicate effectively with children and adults.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Monitor and refocus students according to approved policies and procedures.
Operate instructional and office equipment.
