Job Description



The Solano County Library was established by the Board of Supervisors in 1914. The County Library resided in a number of locations until it moved to its first permanent home in Fairfield at the corner of Union and Texas streets in 1931 now a historical gem located adjacent to the new County Administration Center. Over the years the seven cities in the County joined left merged or affiliated with the Library.


Today the County Library serves six of the seven cities in the County Dixon Fairfield Rio Vista Suisun City Vacaville and Vallejo. Benicia has its own library but is partners with the County Library in providing an online catalog and databases to all County residents. The Solano County Library is thriving. From five libraries in 1990 it has grown to nine. Most of the libraries have been modernized with a focus on quick convenient customer service good collections of books movies music and more: nice furnishings uptodate technology and a place for people to come browse relax read and discuss the topics of the day.


Last year there were 1.5 million visits to the Library.



The Position
The Deputy Director of Library Services is responsible for the ongoing management over divisions of the Department of Library Services through subordinate managers and supervisors. Incumbents may be assigned responsibility for Public Services or Support Services and Community Engagementfor the County library system.

The Deputy Director of Library Services serves as a member of the Librarys executive management team and is responsible for the planning development and implementation of goals objectives policies priorities and performance standards for the assigned divisions; participating in strategic planning for and implementation of major initiatives and new directions for library services; providing innovative leadership in a culture characterized by excellent service; developing evaluating and resolving service needs and related methods of delivery; and creating and maintaining relationships with community members and organizations.

The Support Services and Community Engagement deputy director leads the development and execution of strategies to build and foster relationships awareness and communication between the Library and the communities it serves. The position is responsible for developing communication strategies community engagement and outreach opportunities literacy and learning programs key stakeholder partnerships budgeting and grant writing and data analysis.

The Public Services deputy director oversees the work of public and technical services staff at multiple locations and fosters collaboration across a multibranch system; responds to personnel issues; addresses employee concerns and problems; confers with subordinates to review and monitor operations employee performance and other administrative matters; is responsible for a variety of personnel activities; and resolves the most complex problems. The position requires attention to detail the ability to manage and complete multiple complex projects concurrently and a broad understanding of public and technical services operations.

Ideal candidates will have a strong background in public library management preferably for a mid to largesized library system with a progressive vision of library services; excellent communication skills: effective written and oral communication skills are critical; strong analytical organizational and projectmanagement skills; experience with building trusting relationships; a successful track record of accomplishing specific outcomes that benefit both the library and the community; and are customer focused.

These positions are atwill senior management positions and are exempt from the civil service; incumbents serve at the discretion of the appointing authority.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Current Solano County Library employees are invited to apply for this promotional opportunity.

Experience:Four years of progressively responsible supervisory experience providing library services and related activities including budgeting and planning/evaluation of services including two years in a library management position. AND

Education: A Masters Degree in Library Science is required from an accredited college oruniversity.
