Summary


**This position is open to individuals not currently enrolled or who have never been enrolled in a Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

This position receives academic and onthejob training to achieve the required entrylevel proficiency to perform basic law enforcement services. A cadet must complete a Basic Peace Officer academy and pass the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) licensing examination. This individual will be responsible for isolating and defining unknown conditions resolving critical problems and possibly making lifeordeath decisions. The Deputy Sheriff Cadet may be required to work within the Jail pre and/or postacademy depending on staffing needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Duties include the following:
  • Attend and complete a Basic Peace Officer academy.
  • Complete the Comal County Sheriffs Office Field Training Officer (FTO) program.
  • Additional law enforcementrelated training may be required.
  • Maintains satisfactory performance levels while receiving and demonstrating knowledge of Law Enforcement procedures and enforcement of all applicable state/federal safety statutes and regulations.
  • Maintains satisfactory performance levels while demonstrating skills in first responder duties including the use of radio use of firearms traffic control safety and first aid rules and regulations.
  • May be required to work within the Jail and preand/or postacademy depending on staffing needs.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Attendance is an essential function of the job.

Mandatory Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Must be a U.S. citizen and 21 years of age at the time of the TCOLE examination. A Deputy Sheriff Cadet should be a practitioner in the areas of interpersonal skills problemsolving skills and ethical decisions.
CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS
Other specialized job requirements include a valid Texas drivers license to operate county vehicles and a basic Peace Officer Certification with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) upon completion of the academy. Must be able to meet TCOLE and department requirements for psychological and medical examinations. Must complete and pass the Comal County Sheriffs Office Physical Readiness Testing Program.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The Comal County Sheriffs Office participates in a physical readinesstesting program per the Comal County Sheriffs Office Physical Fitness Policy. Physical assessments are required twice a year to ensure employees possess the physical capability of performing jobrelated tasks while providing services to Comal County and the citizens of Comal County.
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit talk or hear use hands to finger handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
