Position Highlights

Must be onsite in Sioux Falls SD for initial training for up to 34 months; in time ability to work remote but live within the Avera network.

Hours Monday Friday 8:00 AM 5:00 PM

A Brief Overview

Responsible to identify abstract and maintain records of cancer patients within the guidelines and requirements of applicable state laws and accreditation bodies in order to provide timely and accurate statistics as required to maintain accreditation and fulfill quality initiatives and administration requests.

What you will do

  • Reviews source documents/records to determine reportability of diseases as determined by state law accreditation bodies and/or the organization.
  • Abstracts and analyzes patient information as directed in the Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE) manual and records pertinent information from source documents in a text format to support all coded data items.
  • Obtains enters and codes followup information to obtain end results quality of survival and length of survival.
  • Interprets incoming information and updates registry cases as necessary to maintain accurate complete information and current followup information.
  • Assists upon request with the multidisciplinary cancer case conferences by gathering records for cases being discussed making necessary personnel contacts and taking notes.
  • Provides support to clinical and administrative leadership for the organizations professional advisory boards (PABs) and program leadership councils (PLCs).

Essential Qualifications

The individual must be able to work the hours specified. To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily including having visual acuity adequate to perform position duties and the ability to communicate effectively with others hear understand and distinguish speech and other sounds. Required Education License/Certification or Work Experience:

  • Associates or equivalent as determined by the standards of the National Cancer Registrars Association Council on Certification.
  • Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) within 3 Years

Preferred Education License/Certification or Work Experience:

  • Knowledge of health care profession medical terminology and cancer staging
