The mechanical operations and maintenance of the High Containment Core (BSL3/BSL4) laboratories is essential to the universitys research involving biological materials and compliance with the Federal Select Agent Program.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO
The position is specialized for biocontainment facilities. The responsibilities of the position are wide in scope and require specialized expertise in the industrial systems (i.e. electrical plumbing HVAC) and equipment unique to these facilities. The level of judgment and decision making requires a knowledge of high containment support infrastructure. The position implements preventive responsive and monitoring maintenance to support facility components and equipment that are critical for the operation of high and maximum containment facilities. The position operates in facilities under the regulatory requirements for the Federal Select Agent Program.
The essential duties and responsibilities of the Biocontainment Mechanical Manager are the following:
- Maintains and keeps an inventory of parts specialized tools and equipment necessary for continued operations and regular maintenance. Provides installation and maintenance support on complex laboratory support mechanical electromechanical and electronic units/equipment.
- Manages and maintains security systems that control direct access to the high containment laboratories to comply with institutional policies regulatory requirements and occupational health requirements.
- Operates maintains and monitors system controls that are critical for high and maximum containment laboratories (BSL3 ABSL3 BSL4): track record and maintain trending and operations data per regulatory requirements. Responds to alarms emergencies related to industrial systems supporting the laboratories and assists with other emergencies as needed. The laboratories are operational 24/7/365.
- Participates in design and commissioning of new facilities and establishes a baseline for recurring verification and quality control of these systems. Plans and participates in biological waste management and validation procedures and participates in spill prevention and decontamination of biological spills.
- Plans and participates in preventive maintenance on biocontainment systems (e.g. effluent decontamination systems autoclaves boilers bioseal doors freezers biosafety cabinets back flow prevention air flow monitors). Participates in strategic planning of industrial systems that support the operation.
- Repairs medical containment or laboratory equipment (i.e. autoclaves decontamination equipment); schedules and oversees contractors for repairs of systems and equipment where needed.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelors degree and four years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience.
Preferred Hiring Qualifications:
- Experience in building industrial trades: electrical electronic or HVAC operations.
- Ability to use building automated management systems.
- Experience working in a laboratory or highperformance facility setting (hospital nuclear biocontainment).
- Experience in using databases and Microsoft Office software.
- Administrative experience in preparing reports/written communication; Effective written and verbal communication.
- Certification in electrical and/or HVAC trades.
