Welder Weld America (Project Based) Purpose: Weld America a division of Colonnas Shipyard is seeking Weldersto support projectbased assignments in various locations. This position will require frequent travel. Job Description: - Weld together metal components of products as specified by layout blueprints diagram work orders welding procedures or oral instructions using electric arcwelding equipment.
- Select and execute the best method to prepare all material surfaces to be welded ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale slag rust moisture grease or other foreign matter.
- Clean degrease deoxidize or desmut weld joint or work piece using wire brush portable grinder or solvent clean/chemical bath as needed.
- Weld completion accomplished in flat horizontal vertical or overhead positions for at least three base materials using a wide variety of processes. (That is deposit weld beads exhibiting proper sidewall and interpass fusion size profile interpass cleanliness wrap and staggered fused and cleaned starts and stops rarely (no more than 3%) requiring grinding/dressing to meet VT acceptance standards).
- Lay out work from blueprints for the following but not limited to: plates for shearing burning by manual or automatic burning and cutting angles for punching and shearing drilling patterns templates for shaping steel plates and shapes to be shaped with or without heat stiffeners and bulkheads to plates bolt and fastener patterns for various parts manholes and equipment foundations.
- Inspect work for proper fitup and adequate cleanliness for welding.
- Locate materials fabricate and install from blueprints the following but not limited to ladders handrails stairways grating walkways manholes equipment foundations pipe racks brackets pipe systems braces and supports to maintain straightness.
- Fabricate fit brackets panels complex beam/shape structures as needed.
- Plumb transverse bulkheads and panels to fabricate enclosure complex weldments shapes/plates simple and complex parts from a drawing or sketches.
- Operate and set up of the following equipment including but not limited to hydraulic jacks/pumps chain falls comealong steamboat ratchets slings tie downs iron workers saws pneumatic/electric tools drill press pipe benders press brakes plate shears plasma cutting torches and all manual semiautomatic & automatic cutting torches & machines.
- Expertly repair base metal products and completed welds by adding the minimum amount of weld metal or heat and the minimum amount of grinding/smoothing to meet job specification.
- Perform multipass all position fillet and groove welds using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) Submerged Arc Welding FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) processes or the most efficient combination thereof for steels stainless steels or nickelbased alloys and for copperbased alloys aluminum alloys or titanium alloys.
- Perform airarc back gouging and oxyacetylene torching (e.g. brazing cutting or preheating) GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) pipe welding pipe flange/ socket welding.
- Qualify to perform either flux cored inner shield welding weld overlay cladding automated back gouging plasma back gouging or any combination thereof.
- Mark or tag material with proper job number piece marks and other identifying marks as required and always mark completed welds with welder number.
- Perform single pass 5/16inch minimum fillet welds in all positions using FCAW on carbon steel and at least inch singlepass fillets on two other materials.
- Supervise set up to perform welding in accordance with applicable WPS all welding equipment such as: wire feeders subarc tractors Bug Os power sources etc.
- Clean torches and connect/layout cables and whips to optimize performance and perform routine maintenance on all equipment.
- Recommend WPSs and WPS upgrades required for a job; when assigned produces or supervises production documentation and testing of PQRs and WPQs
- Train lessskilled welders enforcing good workmanship and safe welding practices throughout the work area.
- Identify gaps in weld process controls and weld process surveillance inspections and recommends corrective action
- Perform comprehensive workmanship inspection and when directed inspect all welds grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes while observing QA/NDT hold points as applicable.
- Complete standard dimensional computations and devise bracing and weld sequencing steps to maintain tolerances minimizing distortions.
Qualifications: - Must have technical training and prefer at least 3 years experience in Welding.
- Must be certified with proper documentation to perform multipass all position fillet and butt welds using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) Gas Tungsten Arc (GTAW) GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) for steel stainless steel or nickelbased alloys and for either aluminum alloys copperbased alloys or titanium alloys.
- Must have a comprehensive broad and current knowledge of welding techniques tools and equipment.
- Must have expert knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade.
- Must be able to work effectively with others.
- Must be proficient in reading all types of blueprints and weld symbols drawing dimensions/ tolerances complex shapes and weld joints.
- Must be able to build plans conduct sequencing acquire welding tools jigs & fixtures build platforms/staging and follow work instructions to control distortion and improve qualityadjusted productivity.
- Must be able to enter and move through manholes and climb ladders to reach and work inside confined spaces.
- Must have hands on experience with heavy metal steel welding procedures in all positions.
- Must have basic mechanical knowledge and skills.
- Must have experience with mirror welding.
- Must be a steady reliable worker and exemplary craftsman.
- Must be able to comprehend and follow instructions and give instructions when needed.
- Must have experience with performing visual inspections of welds and fitups.
- Must be familiar with different forms of weld NDT and how specified NDT impacts selection and execution of weld processes.
- Must pass the J1 vision test and respirator fit test.
Desired Qualifications: - Shipfitting experience highly preferred.
Travel Requirements: - Frequent Travel; 80% or more.
Physical Requirements: - Must be able to lift carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job but no less than 20 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders work in extreme temperature environments aboard ships in shipyards under industrial conditions and in confined spaces including enter and moving through manholes.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat humidity noise and dirty conditions working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks forklifts & manlifts.
- While performing the duties of this job you may frequently be required to stand walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and required to reach with hands and arms climb and balance stoop squat kneel twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
- Frequent use of respirator.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding cutting or working with molten metal.
