Job Description:
Job Summary
This position supports The Salvation Armys disaster services program in the production and delivery of accurate and timely preparedness response and recovery public information to a variety of audiences including the media donors government and charitable partners and the public.
The position is responsible for telling the story of Salvation Army relief services through a variety of mediums including mass media photo and video presentations social media print and online stories blogs digital marketing and appeals and newsletters.
The position leads public information training efforts and develops public information related trainings workshops and seminars. During a disaster the position works with Salvation Army local and Ministry units to coordinate a consistent public information message prepares Salvation Army spokespeople for major media appearances publicizes Salvation Army relief efforts through social media while monitoring and correcting misinformation and will deploy onsite to disaster areas to serve as the Public Information Officer (PIO) on an Incident Management Team.
Key Accountabilities
Coordinates public/media communications for The Salvation Armys Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) during disaster and nondisaster times.
Responds to media inquiries about EDS preparedness response and recovery operations.
Writes and edits scripts talking points and briefing documents ensuring alignment with Salvation Army messaging.
Prepares spokespeople for interviews and may act as a Salvation Army spokesperson when needed.
Serves as EDS liaison to the THQ Communications Department and divisional PR staff providing regular updates.
Provides public information support during disaster response and may deploy to assist local Public Information Officers (PIOs).
Manages digital messaging and content on EDS platforms promoting awareness and volunteer engagement.
Oversees the quality of all digital print and visual publications ensuring consistency with Salvation Army branding.
Deploys as a credentialed disaster worker to document realtime content supporting mission communication.
Develops and delivers training on disasterrelated public information including Public Information Officer certification courses.
Education and Experience Qualifications
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in communications journalism marketing graphic design or related field
Certification as Salvation Army authorized EDS Responder (must be earned within six months of hire) Associate or Certified Emergency Manager (AEM/CEM) designation must be earned within two years of hire.
First Aid/CPR certification
Valid Drivers License
Minimum of 35 years professional experience of progressively responsible communications media relations public relations and marketing experience in a complex organization.
Demonstrated indepth working knowledge of applicable programs and services legislation and policies as well as issues in federal emergency response.
Working knowledge of all Salvation Army emergency social services primary services programs EDS programs and Salvation Army Social Service programs is an asset.
Skilled in developing public relations strategies for crisis situations and creating highquality written materials (articles stories releases).
Proficient in social media photography videography and digital marketing tools for effective communication and engagement.
Experienced in public speaking oncamera interviews and creating professional presentations.
Capable of deploying to disaster sites to support emergency relief operations and providing ontheground communication.
Knowledgeable in using Microsoft PowerPoint graphic design software and social media platforms for content creation and fundraising efforts.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $66831.48 to $83539.35 with a maximum of $100247.22.Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
