Compensation Range

$5791.00 $8323.42 CAD Monthly

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course employees will be hired transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

JOB SUMMARY

This role is responsible for the coordination planning administration promotion and support of the UBCO Laboratory Safety Program in accordance with applicable regulations (WorkSafe BC Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) BC Fire Code etc) best practices guidelines policies and standards. This role performs worksite inspections of chemical use and storage areas (laboratories kitchens shops and others) participates in teaching the Laboratory Safety Courses (Chemical Safety Biosafety) and supports the chemical waste disposal program. This role supports compliance and JOHSC engagement by administering the worksite inspection and accident investigation program. This role supports campus supervisors towards fulfilling their HSE roles through awareness training and coaching as .

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

This position reports to directly to the Associate Director HSE and works closely with other members of the HSE team. This position interacts with administrative units and all levels of the UBC research community and plays an integral role in the functioning of the HSE departmental responsibilities.

WORK PERFORMED

  • Liaises with the UBC research community and UBC operation staff on health and safety issues including but not limited to safe handling storage and disposal of hazardous materials chemical hazard recognition assessment and control response to emergencies worksite inspections and incident investigations.

  • Supports and confirms regulatory compliance and implementation of best practices through a program of education training inspection and evaluation.

  • Conducts workplace inspections of UBC research laboratories kitchens and other work areas to verify compliance with WorkSafe BC TDG BC Fire Code UBC policies and procedures and best practices.

  • Provides guidance on chemical hazard assessment administrative controls and procedures that ensure safety and compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Reports all inspection findings to the area supervisor and the applicable HSE Advisor.

  • Develops course material and participates in teaching of the Laboratory Safety Courses (Chemical and Biological Safety). Provides specialized/tailored sessions as to faculty staff and students.

  • Coordinates the appropriate classification removal and storage of chemical and biological wastes from teaching and research areas on campus to facilitate disposal.

  • Assists in the selection and proper use of any required personal protective equipment and engineering controls to minimize risk of exposure.

  • Responsible for JOHSCs and LSTs by providing consultation and guidance regarding HSE compliance requirements and UBC O HSE programs and services.

  • Responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive and coordinated HSE program and associated awareness and training strategy.

  • Supports the development and implementation of the UBC O worksite inspections and incident investigation programs to support JOHSCs and to ensure compliance with applicable legislation.

  • Provides consultation and training to laboratory and operational personnel regarding proper response to chemical spills and releases.

  • Provides consultation and conducts site visits to support compliance with the Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations

  • Conducts other related duties as directed to support the implementation of HSE objectives.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

This position supports the implementation of safety hygiene and chemical waste programs and practices which conform to various federal provincial and municipal regulations through the development and implementation of safety training consultation and inspection programs. Inadequate training or consultation could result in serious injury or disease to faculty and staff and students; loss of equipment or facilities; fines and legal liability to UBC as well as loss of reputation to UBC.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work supervised by the Associate Director HSE.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

This position does not directly supervise full or parttime staff. This position provides functional supervision to ensure compliance of all individuals including faculty and staff in their handling of chemical hazards.

QUALIFICATIONS

College Diploma in a relevant discipline. A . Degree in Chemistry Chemical Engineering or a field related to chemical safety would be an asset. Minimum one year experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Thorough and demonstrated knowledge of Occupational Safety and Industrial Hygiene.

Experience an asset. Demonstrated working knowledge of pertinent regulations (WorkSafe BC related regulations WHMIS TDG BC Fire Code) guidelines and best practices.

BC Class 5 Drivers License or equivalent.

Work will involve visiting work sites both indoors and outdoors at all times of the year and on occasion at different times of the day or week; the use of personal protective equipment such as respirators hard hats and safety footwear required while on some work sites; may be required to climb ladders crawl under buildings and enter restricted or confined spaces. Up to 50 per cent of time will be spent in an office setting compiling reports data entry and attending meetings.
