Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify.The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 4 located in Soldotna!
What you will be doing:
This is a seasonal 11month/year position to assist with a nutritionoriented research program conducted at the Kenai Moose Research Center (MRC). Housing is provided; the employee lives onsite and is responsible for monitoring animal welfare and ensuring facilities equipment and supplies necessary to support operations of the permanent field facility are met. The incumbent will be accountable for a variety of duties which includes providing technical support and animal care in a research environment maintaining an inventory ordering supplies and maintenance and alteration of facility structures and equipment.

This position is an 11month permanent seasonal position and earns personal leave which can be flexibly scheduled around research and maintenance tasks.
The working conditions you can expect:
The Kenai Moose Research Center is located in southcentral Alaska 45 road miles northeast of the city of Soldotna on Kenai National Wildlife Refuge lands. The work is conducted in remote surroundings outdoors yearround within large enclosures where moose exhibit speciestypical behaviors and forage on natural vegetation. Supplemental food is provided to animals during winter to reduce loss of body condition. The incumbent will assist with research projects and will be primarily responsible for maintenance duties and animal husbandry at the research center.
- This is a seasonal 11month/year position.
- The incumbent is required to live on site during the work week. Housing is provided by the department while on site. Housing on site consists of a cabin without running water.
- Work environment is remote and will involve exposure to insects wild animals and inclement weather.
- Requires the ability to safely operate offroad vehicles and snowmobiles.
- Requires the ability to regularly lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds.
- Requires the ability to safely and effectively work independently in a remote setting for days at a time and as a team member with two other researchers.
Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge skills and abilities:
- Experience working with large animals weighing at least 220 pounds (100 kg).
- Experience collecting biological samples from live animals and preparing those samples for analysis.
- Experience operating and maintaining ATVs and snowmobiles.
- Basic computer data entry and understanding of Microsoft programs like Excel and Word; and
- Experience working in remote areas and the ability to troubleshoot maintain and repair project equipment and facilities.

Special Note:
A valid drivers license is required.Requires the ability to safely handle and effectively use firearms.
First Aid/CPR. For those not already certified training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
One year of experience as a journey level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 3.
OR
Four years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.
Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying traveling by boat or skiff or contact with drugs or chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are often fulltime but may be seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.Additional Required Information
