JOB DESCRIPTION: School Nurse
POSITION SUMMARY:
- The School Nurse is responsible for managing a health services program at the school site for the assessment evaluation maintenance and improvement of the health of students.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The School Nurse:
- Administers basic health care and First Aid for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill medically fragile and/or injured children. *
- Performs health screenings informs parents of identified problems and makes appropriate recommendations for interventions. *
- Works with families health care providers and other school personnel to verify students meet mandatory state immunization requirements for school attendance. Collaborates with the building administrator to ensure that mandatory state immunization requirements are enforced. *
- Administers and/or facilitates administration of medication taken at school per district policy. *
- Develops implements and/or utilizes individualized health care plans developed by a licensed healthcare provider for students with special health care needs in collaboration with students their families staff licensed healthcare providers and other agencies as appropriate.
- Maintains health and first aid supplies. *
- Provides communicable disease surveillance in schools. Reports findings to proper authorities. *
- Consults on health/safety issues in schools and promotes infection control. *
- Assists in the instruction of students and staff on healthrelated standards including topics such as hygiene disease prevention and overall wellness. *
- Participates on healthrelated committees and teams as appropriate and as requested. *
- Maintains school health records. *
- Prepares and submits reports as required. *
- Works closely with students who are identified as having a healthrelated disability by providing direct nursing services monitoring progress with respect to health conditions and consulting with students teachers parents and other licensed healthcare providers.
- Responds appropriately to student behavior in the total school environment by enforcing school rules in hallways on school grounds in other school areas away from the classroom and on schoolsponsored trips. *
- Participates in professional growth (such as professional organizations coursework workshops and conferences) and other professional activities (such as school and/or District committees taskforces indepth studies or councils).
- Follows the policies and procedures of the school and the District. *
- Demonstrates a sense of professional responsibility such as demonstrating ethical behavior; providing accurate data and reports when needed; meeting deadlines; maintaining confidentiality; caring for the equipment and materials; and dressing appropriately and presenting a good role model. *

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Ability to use effective communication skills; knowledge of education law and regulations; ability to use time effectively; good organizational skills; ability to maintain a positive relationship with other staff by collaborating and working cooperatively with them (including supervisors); knowledge of physiological psychological emotional and educational behavioral development of children and/or adolescents; ability to lead meetings; and ability to help groups achieve consensus.
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelors Degree; current license to practice as a registered nurse in Wyoming.
Work Experience: Prior experience working as a registered nurse is preferred.

Additional Work Conditions and Physical Abilities: May require travel to multiple sites.
