Job Description

Position Title: Transportation Manager
Supported by: Assistant Director of Operations
FLSA Status: FullTime Exempt/Salary

Food Bank for the Heartland has connected our communities with food resources and hope since 1981. The fight against hunger is our ongoing collaborative effort. We work with individuals organizations food manufacturers and distributors grocery stores the USDA and Feeding America to procure food and purchase food to supplement donations. Through the collective power of our leadership employees partners volunteers and donors we can reach more communities serve more people and address food insecurity more directly and effectively. In Short:
The Transportation Manager will support Food Bank for the Heartlands (FBFH) mission to reduce food insecurity by overseeing the operational aspects of the transportation fleet and staff. This role will serve as the lead in logistical cooperation between multiple departments. In addition this role is accountable for achieving operational results by supporting departmental strategies and specific objectives in alignment with FBFHs strategic plan.

Your Mission:
  • Collaboration and Process Development:
    • Collaborate with multidepartmental teams to share expertise solicit feedback and develop transportation processes that ensure compliance with regulatory bodies.
    • In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Operations identify and implement transportation technology and system needs to support organizational efficiencies and effectiveness.
    • Emphasize teamwork so that each team member understands the importance of assisting in other areas.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Implement and supervise safetyfocused processes for equipment/vehicle audits driver safety and employee training to ensure compliance with FBFH policies DOT and OSHA regulations.
    • Implement company shipping and safety policies and enforce compliance with DOT regulations.
    • Complete DOT/FMSCA training as required and implement policies and programs to ensure fleet operations follow safety and regulatory standards
  • Team Management and Development:
    • Manage hiring onboarding development and performance of staff providing coaching counseling and documentation as needed for effective performance management
    • Evaluate and implement the transportation staffs safety equipment and training needs.
    • Develop department goals team goals and performance metrics that align with Food Bank for the Heartlands strategic plan.
    • Foster a positive work environment with open communication and trust while administering policies fairly and addressing issues with employees and management in a professional manner.
    • Recognize and reinforce employee performance while ensuring all team members receive the necessary training for success.
  • Operational Efficiency and Budget Management:
    • Manage the refueling schedules costs and fueling vendor relationships to ensure adequate resource availability and prevent disruption of transportation services.
    • Analyze shipping data and optimize logistics routes schedules and personnel to improve efficiency minimize transportation costs and ensure delivery accuracy.
  • Documentation and Auditing:
    • Maintain and audit all Transportationrelated SOPs annually.
  • Other duties entrusted within your scope of practice.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Commitment to the FBFH mission and values
  • Experience with process improvement and implementation in a distribution environment
  • Excellent organizational and leadership abilities
  • A thorough understanding of DOT and FMCSA safety regulations
  • Knowledge of AIB and general food safety requirements auditing requirements inspections etc. is preferred
  • Knowledge of truck maintenance and safety procedures DOT requirements as they pertain to Class A and Class B Drivers
  • Computer and technology skills around Microsoft Office and general technology.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills to be able to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Consistent organizational skills with a passion for thriving in a fastpaced multitasking environment prioritizing work and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently accurately and problem solve.
  • Strong analytical abilities.
  • Ability to consistently commit to trustworthiness dependability and reliability.
  • Ability to establish credibility trust and partnership at all levels in the organization.
  • Integrity respect and commitment to urgently serving people in need in Nebraska and western Iowa.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other staff volunteers and the general public.
  • Availability for occasional night and weekend work
Your Story:
  • Bachelors degree in logistics supply chain management or related field required.
  • Four (4) year of proven experience in fleet operations and/or planning required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years leadership experience of managing high performing teams.
  • Relevant experience can substitute for education requirement.
  • Lived experience with the impacts of systemic racism or marginalization is a plus.
  • Forklift experience a plus.
