Community Placement & Events Manager
APA! BACKGROUND: Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is one of Austins most dynamic and bestloved nonprofits. The organization is the leader in the no kill movement nationally and is considered a national thought leader in animal welfare. APA! locally rescues treats and adopts out 10000 homeless dogs and cats each year providing the safety net for Austins most atrisk shelter pets which helps Austin to be a nokill city while also assisting other communities in saving homeless animals. The organization is distinguished by the scrappiness of its grassroots nontraditional communitybased animal rescue work.
APA! continues to innovate best practices to save lives and teaches its renowned lifesaving model through American Pets Alive! APA!s national division. In 2020 AmPA! began the Human Animal Support Services (HASS) project a collaborative movement of more than 10000 animal welfare professionals working in nearly 1900 organizations. HASS is the firstofitskind collective of shelters and animal welfare professionals coming together to build communityfocused animal services that better meet the needs of people and pets by keeping humananimal families together and keeping pets unnecessarily out of shelters.
BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY/OVERVIEW: Foster care is the most humane way to house pets but foster pets often stay too long in care or dont have access to the resources and visibility needed for adoption. This role exists to change that. The Community Placement Program Manager will lead a volunteerpowered team to move animals from foster care to adoptive homes quickly and joyfully by organizing communityfacing events managing offsite cat adoption centers and implementing doityourself (DIY) adoptions.
This position brings communitybased placement to lifeby designing events like Puppy Parties managing PetSmart adoption spaces and giving fosters the tools they need to finalize adoptions. Whether its setting up a kitten cuddle corner or managing two venues on a Saturday afternoon youll be the connector that makes these magical moments happen.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Volunteer Leadership & Coordination
- Recruit train and lead a team of volunteers to host and staff offsite adoption and community engagement events.
- Build a sustainable volunteer pipeline and foster a culture of teamwork accountability and compassion.
- Provide ongoing coaching and support to volunteer leaders.
Foster MakeReady & DIY Adoptions
- Coordinate with foster caregivers medical and placement teams to ensure animals are eventready.
- Schedule vaccine clinics wellness checks and other preadoption needs.
- Plan dropoff hours and develop foster meetandgreet opportunities at APA! locations and partner venues.
- Lead the implementation and management of APA!s DIY adoption program.
Event Planning & Execution
- Create and maintain a publicfacing events calendar.
- Design and manage recurring events like Puppy Parties Kitten Parties and Foster Club Matches.
- Oversee weekend events across multiple venues ensuring each site is fully prepped staffed and stocked.
- Develop an event management and ROI tracking system.
Offsite Cat Adoption Centers
- Act as the main point of contact for PetSmart and similar partners.
- Train staff and volunteers to manage offsite centers efficiently.
- Ensure centers are consistently filled and rotated with adoptable cats.
- Coordinate and promote weekly adoption events at offsite locations.
Collaboration Communication & Data Tracking
- Collaborate with Marketing and Philanthropy to promote events and donor engagement.
- Match pets to events in coordination with foster adoption and placement teams.
- Track data evaluate program effectiveness and report on community engagement outcomes.
Job duties may include some or all of the above and other duties as assigned by manager
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Attend and participate in all required training sessions and meetings
- Maintain open and consistent communication with Program Manager or designee supervisor and other colleagues
- Partner with Volunteer Managers to learn about the volunteer programs and manage volunteers interested in your department on an ongoing basis
- Able to react to change productively and perform other related duties as assigned
- Able to work evenings weekends and holidays as needed
- Able to work in a highvolume fastpaced highstress environment
QUALIFICATIONS SKILLS & EXPECTATIONS:
- 2 years in event management retail volunteer coordination or community engagement
- Proven success managing volunteers or staff and delegating effectively
- Highly organized with strong time management and multitasking abilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; a natural relationship builder
- Availability on weekends and occasional evenings for event coverage
- Comfortable lifting 40 lbs and working outdoors during events

- Willing and committed to working well with volunteers and staff in all roles
Preferred Qualifications:
- Volunteer experience or volunteer management
- Sales or retailbased animal placement experience
- Familiarity with Shelterluv Airtable or volunteer platforms
- Creative mindset for communitycentered programming
PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds and work in outdoor/indoor environments
- Must be able to work around animals including potentially aggressive or sick animals
- Comfortable standing or walking for long periods and performing physical event setup

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Standard office environment with exposure to environmental conditions that include working with and near animals
- Uses their own transportation to travel and transport

- Possible exposure to contagious diseases
- Rapid pace with exposure to potential hazards including animal waste disinfectants and high levels of noise
TIME COMMITMENT:
- This is a fulltime exempt position with an average of 40 hours per week.
- Shift and schedule flexibility is required as weekly schedule is subject to change
- Able to work evenings weekends and holidays as needed
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: This position reports to the Director of Customer Service and works closely with the Marketing Philanthropy Placement and Foster teams. This position also partners with PetSmart Petco vet clinics and other community organizations to maximize placement opportunities.
