Description

Position Summary:

Methodist University is seeking to hire a Director of Standardized Patients for its new School of Medicine in in Fayetteville NC. The Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine (MU CFVH) is a LCME candidate program with an anticipated start date of Summer 2026 for its charter class. Our mission is to prepare our graduates to be socially accountable communityengaged evidencebased compassionate equityfocused physician leaders who will contribute to mitigating health disparities and improving health outcomes in southeastern NC or wherever they may practice.

The Director of Standardized Patients is part of the Academic Affairs office and reports directly to the Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills Education. The Director of the Standardized Patient Program at MU CFVH School of Medicine plays a crucial educational role by overseeing the Standardized Patient program and contributing to the development and operation of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and other educational activities. This position is responsible for building and growing the SP program in alignment with national best practices and the medical schools mission. In this role the Director will manage various administrative functions including scheduling and orienting SPs budget preparation and coordination of reports and projects. The Director will also be responsible for monitoring and guiding the programs operations ensuring that it meets the highest standards of quality and effectiveness. The Director will lead the recruitment selection training and assessment of Standardized Patients while providing professional development opportunities and conducting performance reviews. Additionally the role requires the ability to handle complex events resolve conflicts and implement new initiatives effectively. The Director will keep abreast of national best practices and collaborate with academic leadership and other partners to coordinate the programs role in research and quality improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and administer all aspects of the Standardized Patient program at MU CFVH School of Medicine.
  • Collaborate with faculty members and course/clerkship leaders in identifying and developing cases for SP activities.
  • Recruit hire onboard train and manage persons to serve as Standardized Patients (SPs).
  • Ensure that the training provided to SPs meets the specific needs of the curriculum and follows best practices in standardized patient methodology.
  • Evaluate program quality to assure that SPs are authentic standardized and accurate.
  • Train SPs to assess evaluate and provide feedback to students based on curricular objectives.
  • Conduct regular SP performance reviews and design and administer performance improvement plans.
  • Maintain an uptodate database of SPs to include demographic and contact information.
  • Maintain a library of SP cases/scenarios and related training materials for faculty and learners.
  • Build cases in Laerdal SimCapture for OSCE sessions.
  • Assign OSCE cases to faculty for grading and assign OSCE evaluations to student learners for peer review and selfevaluation.
  • Identify appropriate Standardized Patients for individual educational activities based on specific skills experience demographic and other requirements of the educational activity design and objectives.
  • Coordinate and maintain a calendar of program operations including teaching and testing activities.
  • Provide prebrief orientations and instructions to student learners prior to all OSCE sessions.
  • Proctor student learners during OSCE sessions.
  • Apply knowledge about curriculum requirements to coordinate interprofessional health education program SP simulations.
  • Participate in budget development and track expenses.
  • Develop and lead workshops and/or informational sessions for learners faculty and staff.
  • Consult with course directors and education deans in the development of teaching and testing curricula involving SPs.
  • Manage administration of all aspects of SP exams including scheduling instructions data collection and scoring of data.
  • Provide summary reports to program leadership.
  • Assist the simulation team with achieving and maintaining accreditation of the Cape Fear Valley Simulation Center through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
  • Contribute to scholarly projects research and quality improvement initiatives related to Standardized Patients OSCEs and medical education.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree is required Masters preferred.
  • Demonstrable skills related to project management and leadership.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to provide feedback.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a dynamic team.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology or clinical experience is desirable.
  • Simulation medical education and theater experience are highly valued.
