Job Description

Job Title: READING SPECIALIST

Reports To: PRINCIPAL

General Job Description:

Under the supervision of the principal the elementary reading specialist will:

  • provide explicit instruction primarily to students demonstrating characteristics of dyslexia
  • provide coaching support and guidance in best practices for literacy instruction

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide direct explicit systematic instruction with an emphasis on students displaying characteristics of dyslexia.
  2. Maintain accurate records of students served including assessment and progress monitoring data and communicate student progress with parents and general education teachers.
  3. Use data to track and monitor literacy growth and provide recommendations forliteracy improvement goals at the school level.
  4. Collaborate and communicate with classroom teachers and specialized personnel (e.g. special education and/or ELL teachers etc.) to align instruction and supportreading development.
  5. Assist with screening evaluating reviewing student achievement and planning appropriate interventions for students based on data.
  6. Support staff and parent understanding of researchbased reading writing and spelling strategies.
  7. Collaborate and/or attend IEP 504 SAT PLCs and parent conference meetings for students served or as a resource.
  8. Attend staff development curriculum development meetings and other professional activities to keep abreast of developments research and new technology in the field.
  9. Reflect on successes and areas of growth as a teacher seek to improve performance and respond to feedback.
  10. Create and contribute to a positive growthoriented learning environment.
  11. May be required to perform other related functions/duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May supervise educational assistants practicum students student teachers and high school civic leadership.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelors or Masters Degree
  2. Current New Mexico Teaching License
  3. CALP or CALT certification (candidate must at minimum be enrolled in a program and obtain certification within 1 year of hire)
  4. Valid Drivers; license and Car Insurance (if traveling from site to site)

Physical Requirements:

Sitting standing lifting and carrying (up to 40 pounds) climbing stairs reaching squatting kneeling having full mobility of fingers/hands and moving light furniture may be required unless ADA accommodations have been mutually agreed on and does not create an undue hardship upon the district.

Safety and Health:

Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions (blood borne pathogens body fluids etc.)

Equipment/Material Handled:

Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate multimedia equipment including current technology as needed.

Work Environment:

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise and temperature. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be selfmotivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. Afterhours work may be required. May make site visits when needed. May work under stressful conditions on occasion.

Terms of Employment:

Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
