About the Position
The Property & Evidence Custodian exists to perform manual and clerical work in the maintenance of property evidence and records. They must monitor compliance with federal county and state laws and regulations and must safeguard and maintain the integrity of evidence and chain of custody.

Position Qualifications

Education
- High School Diploma or GED
Experience
- One (1) year of warehouse inventory control or recordkeeping experience.
OR
Combined education and experience qualifications
- Postsecondary education may substitute for therequiredexperience on a yearforyear basis.
Other requirements
Training with the exception of Arizona drivers license to be provided onthejob:
- FEMA NIMS IS100 AND 700 OSHA training Payroll training PREA training
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain by the time of hirea valid Arizona drivers license.
- Within six months of employment or assignment the employee must train functionally test and affirm the proficiency of the Arizona Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIS) Network TOC certification retest every 2 years.
- Must be able to pass the County Forklift Proficiency License and be certified to operate a forklift recertify every 3 years.
- Within 6 months of employment or assignment the employee must be functional with the following computer programs: Que Tel System Jail Management System and TraCS System.
- Ability to obtain International Association for Property and Evidence Certification within two years from date of hire.
- Prior to hiring the Sheriffs Office requires that all candidates pass an extensive background review.

- Experience in law enforcement and/or high security environment in a property/evidence room.
- Certification by the International Association for Property and Evidence is highly desirable.

Essential Job Tasks
(This is not an allinclusive list of all job duties that may be required; employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.)
- Maintains and secures evidence including but not limited to weapons narcotics drug paraphernalia biological evidence currency bodily fluids poisons flammable and explosive material and unsanitary materials.
- Receives and catalogs evidence and other property; verifies serial numbers content count or weight and enter appropriate data in logs records computer databases and forms in accordance with established procedures.
- Labels and stores property in accordance with prescribed procedures and methods to ensures the safe handling security packaging and identification of items.
- Observes and inspects submitted property and evidence to ensure compliance with prescribed packaging and submission standards in accordance to policy and procedure.
- Prepares and releases evidence and property to authorized personnel for possession laboratory analysis examination or court exhibit in accordance with established procedures.
- Destroys/disposes of chemical waste narcotics and unclaimed/unsold firearms following carefully prescribed procedures.
- Observesburning to ensure all materials are destroyed.
- Monitors case records in order to dispose of property no longer needed for evidence purposes and dispose of unclaimed property.
- Communicates with the general public attorneys and law enforcement personnel concerning inquiries relating to the release or storage of property and evidence.
- Follows the disposition of criminal cases to prepares impounded property for appropriate treatment as authorized.
- Duplicates audio and video evidence for review by prosecutors defense attorneys and courts.
- Delivers and retrieves records from all MCSO facilities on request; copies distributes and refiles.
- Accepts excess inmate property make notification to owners of the property track responses and release or dispose of property accordingly.
- Instructs at the basics and advanced training for detention and sworn officers.
- Conducts evidence packaging classes at the districts as needed.
- Retrieves sensitive confidential material from all MCSO facilities and observesthe shredding of or proper disposal of this material.
- Maintains warehouse and computer equipment to ensure all function properly.
- Performs criminal history computer background checks to determine appropriate release of firearms.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations decrease turnaround times streamline work processes and work cooperatively/jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
- Be present at the work site to perform assigned tasks at the times and dates scheduled/assigned by the supervisor.

Property & Evidence Custodians must work with a variety of hazardous items using normal protective equipment to properly handle and destroy items. Must be able to work rotating shifts weekends holidays rotating days off and may be subject to emergency callout after normal duty hours. May be required to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.

Typically successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to midpoint of the range based on applicable experience internal equity and budgetary allowances.
