Job Description

Study Requirements:

Throughout the 12month trainee program you will complete a Certificate II in Maritime Operations  (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) through a combination of formal training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and practical on the job experience 

Traineeship Outcome:

Subject to assessment and seatime requirements by AMSA this qualification will allow you to work as a GPH (General Purpose Hand/Deckhand).  This is an entry level qualification additional qualifications would be required if you would like to command a vessel or work your way up to Ship Master.

What you will learn:

  • Practical skills in coastal navigation using a range of vessels.
  • Practical firefighting and survival skills required for safety at sea.
  • Practical mechanical and engineering skills for a range of vessels.
  • Health safety and environmental work practices aboard a vessel

Qualifications :

To be considered for this opportunity you must:

  • Have completed grade 10 or above
  • Be a  Mackay local or a local of the region Mackay 
  • Enjoy practical hands on outdoor work
  • Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and be able to provide a certificate of Aboriginality.
  • Have a genuine interest in the maritime industry a  willingness to learn and a positive attitude 
  • Be committed to completing a recognised qualification through the traineeship
  • Be able to undertake a preemployment medical and drug and alcohol testing.
  • Having a valid Australian Drivers License or on the way to achieving one an advantage
