DEQ has an open opportunity for a Marine Fisheries Technician.
DMFNC04
This Marine Fisheries Technician supports the southern district biologists in the Fisheries Management Section on finfish projects and assists the Habitat and Enhancement Section with planting of cultch material from barges for oyster and clam habitat. This position is with the Fisheries Management Section but works with both sections in a collaborative way. The technician will work on federally funded projects under Fisheries Management and will participate in various fisheryindependent programs and fisherydependent programs as well as any other divisionwide programs that are all an integral part of management needs. When participating in the Habitat and Enhancement Section the technician will participate in loading and deploying cultch material annual shellfish data collection and other biological sampling programs. This position is also responsible for operating and maintaining division vessels trucks trailers and sampling or monitoring equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting field sampling for collection of biological data from finfish crustaceans and shellfish using sampling gears such as: seines trawls electrofisher gillnets and patent tongs.
- Recording compiling submitting and verifying biological data taken from fisheries dependent and independent sampling activities.
- Operating and maintaining division vessels and motors vehicles trailers and sampling or monitoring equipment.
- Assisting with planting cultch material for oyster and clam habitat.
The Division of Marine Fisheries
The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the states marine and estuarine resources. The DMFs jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the ninemember Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission the MidAtlantic Fishery Management Councilthe South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. To qualify for this position applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL the following:
- Experience operating and/or trailering boats
- Experience with maintenance of vessels and/or motors trailers vehicles or sampling equipment
- Experience with biological sampling and/or data collection
Management Preferences:
- General understanding of marine and estuarine species identification.
- Basic computer skills

Associates degree in one of the agricultural biological engineering environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Supplemental and Contact Information
