Looking for a WORK STUDY eligible student. Garden and Research Technicians are student employees who support the long term maintenance and health of the Learning and Healing garden participate in and maintain research projects carried out by current students in coursework and student groups on campus. As a garden and research technician you will support the campus garden and our undergraduate research for our science department. You will work closely with our science staff and faculty to meet the needs of the department. Weeding planting regular watering harvesting supporting our compost program organizing and cleaning indoor and outdoor lab spaces will be regular tasks. Scheduling is flexible but regular weekly meetings with staff/faculty will be required.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

The specific percentages for time spent in any of the following areas will be codeveloped with your faculty supervisor in your Garden and Research Technician Plan. Here is a list of what is possible:

  • Watering: Regular visits to our greenhouse and raised beds to water depending on weather conditions. Summer watering may be more frequent.
  • Landscaping support: Improving our landscaping and working as a team with our volunteers to beautify our space shoveling gravel or bark chips pulling weeds.
  • Tree support: trimming trees with loppers moving or chipping debris.
  • Compost support: You will coordinate with Fork and Flame to move food scraps to our compost system at regular intervals and support our ongoing compost projects. May involve shoveling and moving large quantities of debris.
  • Lab support: You will support the indoor and outdoor organization and clean up of our laboratory spaces. Occasional watering of indoor plants or feeding lab animals indoors may be required as well.

Typical Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Passion for gardening and working outdoors
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail organizational skills and a commitment to safety.
  • Previous experience with gardening landscaping or farm work (informal ok) is preferred but not required.
  • Physical ability to bend kneel perform repetitive motion move debris pull weeds withstand outdoor exposure in varied weather
  • Utilize wheelbarrows shovels loppers hand tools
  • Work study eligible through financial aid
  • Able to be present on campus for an agreed upon work schedule
  • Work well as part of a team and independently
  • Adaptable to different working environments
  • Good communication and problem solving skills
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 610 credits each quarter
  • At least 1 quarter completed at LCC (preferred but not required)
  • Maintain 2.8 Cumulative GPA or above
  • Stay in good Academic Standing each quarter & meet minimum academic requirements

Work Schedule & Compensation:
  • Work between 510 hours per week.
  • Must have frequent summer availability several times a week (min of 3x wk).
  • Shifts typically range from 1/23 hours.
  • Pay days are on the 10th and 25th of each month.
