Summary:

The Director of Residential Life works within the Residential Life team to foster a residential environment that fulfills the vision mission and goals of the Department of Residential Life & Housing to provide safe inclusive and wellmaintained facilities that build intentional communities to empower residents in their academic excellence citizenship and personal growth. The Director of Residential Life is a masterslevel fulltime experienced professional who provides senior leadership for a comprehensive residential life program serving approximately 5900 oncampus students. The position will report to the Executive Director of Residential Life & Housing. The role of the Director of Residential Life is to enhance the livinglearning experience by providing a holistic approach to working with staff and residents. This position provides leadership and supervision of approximately 21 fulltime employees including five Assistant Directors fourteen Hall Directors and two Conduct and Care Coordinators. This position directs and manages initiatives related to community development educational initiatives crisis response leadership development retention efforts and creative problem solving. This person will assist with all areas of residential and student staff oversight and provide leadership for new residential programs and initiatives within the department. This position will serve as a liaison with various departments across the University.


Qualifications
  • Minimum hiring standards:
  • Masters degree preferably in Student Personnel Higher Education Counseling or a related field or relevant professional experience.
  • A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in residence life and housing services and supervision of professional staff.
  • Strong skills in building a cohesive team and collaborative work are required.
  • Experience in crisis management student development student belonging facility management budget management and leadership development required.
  • Ability to multitask provide quality customer service and organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing online systems web applications and/or standard office packages (word processing spreadsheet electronic mail).
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect professionalism and civility with a population of faculty staff and students from various backgrounds and experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred hiring standards:

  • Previous Residence Life livein experience; advanced crisis experience.
  • Advanced supervision experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to residential community building and academic success (i.e. working with residential learning communities programming model development and/or Residential Curriculum experience academic programs/initiatives).
  • Knowledge and incorporation of student development practices assessment and budget management are highly desired.
  • Student conduct and policy experience and involvement with student leadership/advising.
  • Ability to create and analyze various reports for internal and external constituents related to student success and student satisfaction instruments.
  • Experience collaborating with administrative services operations facilities and campus partners across a University.
