School Nurse Position OverviewThe school nurse provides skilled nursing assessments administers routine emergency first aid and manages the medical needs of scholars and staff. The nurse conducts immunization and asthma surveillance as well as conducting statemandated health screenings. As an Expeditionary Learning school the school nurse coordinates medication and first aid procedures for all outofschool expeditions. In addition the school nurse acts as a liaison between the parents of those scholars with complex medical or emotional needs school and medical professionals. As a member of the educational team the school nurse provides annual training for staff and faculty interprets medical data for the faculty and provides individual health plans for select ResponsibilitiesProvides emergency medical care to scholarsAdministers and/or supervises the administration of prescription medication to scholarsCounsels and/or educates scholars in small groups or as individuals concerning medical issuesMonitors and assesses compliance with immunization standards as per DPH regulationsPerforms vision hearing scoliosis and other healthrelated screenings as required by DPHDevelops and maintains contacts with medical persons or facilities who might provide direct service or consultationParticipates in meetings about scholars when medical input interpretation or consultation is neededConducts formal workshops and/or informal training for staff as appropriateMaintains updated health recordsQualificationsA valid license to practice as a registered nurse in MassachusettsA minimum of a Baccalaureate degreeValid certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation A minimum of two years of community health or pediatric nursing experienceComputer literacy and competency in the use of existing technologyCompleted the required Massachusetts school nurse competencies or be willing to attend and complete coursesStrong communication skills
