Job Description

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine Ophthalmology Service invites qualified individuals to apply for an open faculty position in the Academic Clinician (AC) track in Small Animal Ophthalmology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Applications are currently being accepted and the start date is negotiable.

Academic Clinicians spend the majority of their effort in clinical service and clinical teaching endeavors. The position will focus on patient care education of veterinary students training of specialty and rotating interns and ophthalmology residents and supervision of veterinary nurses. Potential for collaborative research abounds but advancement within this faculty track does not include a research requirement. Eighty per cent (42 weeks a year) of the ophthalmologists time will be devoted to clinical service within the Small Animal Ophthalmology Service with the remaining time dedicated to scholarly activity and administrative duties. The successful candidate is expected to have history of or potential as an exemplary clinician and educator. Faculty AC positions are longterm nontenured Associated Faculty positions with reappointment every three years. Promotion along the ladder of the University Academic ranks is available. In addition to working in a dynamic hospital setting with excellent support staff the advantages of the position include an exciting intellectual environment with outstanding residents and faculty boarded in surgery dentistry critical care anesthesiology radiology oncology and internal medicine. Exotic cases are seen in conjunction with the local zoo and a specialized private practice in the area.

The candidate will join a thriving ophthalmology service with a team of four American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) and European College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ECVO) diplomates two talented American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmology residents one specialty intern one dedicated certified veterinary nurse and one nursing assistant. The service is equipped with standard phacoemulsification equipment an Iridex diode laser ERG machine a Heidelberg Spectralis OCT and has access to advanced imaging modalities such as CT and MRI as well as radiation therapy. The service boasts a robust and diverse caseload and serves as a referral center for the Greater Philadelphia area. Afterhours responsibilities include shared backup support for residents and the specialty intern on call.

Candidates must have a veterinary degree and be boardcertified by the ACVO or ECVO or successfully completed an accredited ACVO/ECVO residency and are preparing for boardcertification. Salary will be commensurate with professional and academic credentials and experience.
