GENERAL DEFINITION:
This is skilled carpentry work at the journeyman level. A position in this class repairs replaces alters and redesigns interior and exterior walls building parts equipment and furnishings in County facilities and buildings. Work also includes the incidental performance of work in related building trades. A position in this class is differentiated from those in related classes by the incumbents responsibility for the individual accomplishment of assigned work. A position in this class reports directly to a technical supervisory position.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only)
Receives work and job orders for repair installation or other maintenance work with partitions floors ceilings doors windows screens and/or cabinets bookcases desks tables and other office furniture; studies building plans blueprints and drawings to identify work requirements and plans; makes repair or alteration including constructing and/or installing additions and partition walls paneling doors window frames and screens ceilings furnishings trim and other structural and related items; installs and repairs related hardware fixtures; uses hand and power tools including hand and table saws planers routers radial arm saw sanders lathes and shapers; cleans up tools and surrounding area while job is in progress and after completion; fixes in place with nails screws adhesives and other joining techniques; inspects finished job for conformance to requirements codes and accepted trade standards.
Determines materials needed for jobs checking against supplies; orders and receives supplies and equipment for each job; coordinates schedule for job performance with other building personnel and those in affected area; keeps records of jobs performed materials used and related information; works with contractors inspectors and vendors to plan for and coordinate efforts in larger alteration or repair jobs; may instruct and oversee the work of other personnel providing assistance with jobs.
May assist other trades personnel and/or perform such maintenance work including work with suspended ceilings concrete work roofing repairs and some grounds work; uses power tools for such jobs including jackhammers tractors forklifts and payloaders.
Performs other work as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of carpentry principles practices methods and techniques commonly employed in the repair alteration and installation of building and furnishing fixtures and parts.
Thorough knowledge of the tools substances and safety precautions of the carpentry trade.
Knowledge of principles and practices addressed by and general provisions of building environmental safety and other code requirements.
Skill in the use and maintenance of carpentry tools and materials.
Ability to learn the specific codes and regulatory provisions governing carpentry work in the County.
Ability to read and interpret building plans and sketches.
Ability to determine time materials and equipment required to complete assigned jobs.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep records of activities.
Ability to lift carry and maneuver into position lumber paneling furnishings and other heavy and/or unwieldy fixtures.
Ability to work in close proximity to nursing facility patients families and visitors if required by work assignment.
ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
Three to four years carpentry work one year which shall have been at the journeyman level.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience which has provided the knowledge skills and abilities cited above.
A criminal background check is required.
