The Alley Buyer is responsible for the efficient and humane handling of hogs in a livestock yard environment. This includes sorting counting weighing tattooing and penning animals while ensuring compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) safety protocols and USDA regulations. The role also supports pork procurement operations by learning company programs and serving as a relief buyer during manager absences.
Sort count weigh and tattoo hogs in preparation for processing.
Pen animals accurately and safely within designated areas.
Learn and apply Procurement Programs carcass merit systems kill sheet processes and weight dock procedures.
Serve as a station relief buyer in the absence of management for vacation or training coverage.
Maintain compliance with animal welfare safety and USDA regulatory guidelines.
Utilize appropriate PPE including hard hat steeltoe boots and hearing protection.
Complete all required training and qualifications for the assigned role.
Education:
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture or related field (May 2025 graduates considered; employment contingent upon degree completion).
Experience:
Prior livestock handling experience strongly preferred.
Skills:
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Basic proficiency in computer applications.
Travel:
Willingness to travel overnight as needed.
Physical Demands:
Ability to stand/walk for full shifts.
Minimal lifting (under 5 lbs); occasional use of moderate to heavy force.
Ability to grasp and handle tools such as flags tattoo hammers and gates.
Variable temperatures depending on season.
Requires consistent use of safety equipment and adherence to animal welfare practices.
