Description

This position performs technical duties in the processing of crime scenes.

Major Duties


  • Processes crime scenes; documents crime scenes utilizing digital photography video recording sketches measurements and identifying and processing evidence.


  • Processes and repackages fingerprint and DNA evidence in the forensics lab.


  • Maintains files and records; prepares a variety of reports.


  • Transfers evidence to the Evidence Custodian for storage in the evidence vault.


  • Attends autopsies to take clear and accurate notes.


  • Orders and maintains lab and crime scene supplies; maintains crime scene vehicle supply inventory.


  • Trains Police Officers in basic crime scene processing and photography techniques.


  • Maintains the forensics lab.


  • Prepares evidence and related paperwork for the District Attorneys Office.


  • Responds to afterhours calls.


  • Performs related duties.


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION


  • Knowledge of fingerprint analysis principles.


  • Knowledge of criminal investigation principles and practices.


  • Knowledge of crime scene processing and evidence collection methods.


  • Knowledge of crime scene photography principles.


  • Knowledge of evidence collection retention and disposal requirements.


  • Knowledge of drug identification principles.


  • Skill in the use of digital photography and videography equipment.


  • Skill in the use of computers and jobrelated software programs.


  • Skill in planning organizing analyzing decision making and problem solving.


  • Skill in public relations.


  • Skill in interpersonal relations.


  • Skill in oral and written communication.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS


The Police Sergeant or Crime Scene Technician Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spotchecks completed work for compliance with procedures accuracy and the nature and propriety of the results.


GUIDELINES


Guidelines include local federal and state laws court rules department general orders and city policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment selection and interpretation in application.


COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK


  • The work consists of related technical duties. The unique nature of each case contributes to the complexity of the work.


  • The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the processing of crime scenes. Successful performance ensures the efficient and effective collection preservation and analysis of evidence.


CONTACTS


  • Contacts are typically with department personnel other city staff representatives of other law enforcement agencies medical examiners and members of the public.


  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information resolve problems and provide services.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT


  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing walking bending crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects climbs ladders uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes the sense of smell.


  • The work is typically performed in an office laboratory and outdoors occasionally in inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to irritating chemicals and contagious or infectious diseases. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks goggles gloves etc.


SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY


None.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a standard seniorhigh school or GED equivalent as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and


  • One (1) year recent experience in the collection and analysis of crime scene evidence.


  • Completion of a 120 hour general internship in Forensic Sciences Criminal Justice Criminology or closely related field within the past three (3) years preferred.


  • Possession of current/valid National Integrated Ballistic Information Network certification (NIBIN) preferred.


  • Graduation from an accredited* college or university with an Associates degree in Forensic Sciences Criminal Justice Criminology or closely related field substitutes for the required experience.


*An accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT/PROMOTION/DEMOTION/TRANSFER

The City of Dothans Police Department may administer a polygraph examination to anyone hired into the Police Department. The examination will be a question and answer test that covers areas of your background including but not limited to your employment application employment history and involvement in criminal activity such as thefts and domestic violence drug usage and participation in the distribution of illegal and legal prescription medications.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Possession of a valid operator drivers license and an acceptable driving record (PBA 09/10/01).


  • Applicant must be at least 21 years of age.


  • Employees in this position must obtain/maintain a National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) certification within eighteen (18) months of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer.


  • In an emergency and/or standby situation an employee in this position must be able to report to his/her regular workstation in a maximum of 30 minutes from the time of notification. (Sec. 230. (2) / PBA 1/9/95) This requirement must be met within six (6) months of employment/promotion/ demotion/transfer.


  • Employees in this position may work oncall nights weekends and holidays. Employees are subject to twentyfour/seven (24/7) emergency callout.


  • An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal credit past employment and reference checks.


  • Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy which includes preemployment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12).


  • Must meet the City of Dothans employment physical standard which includes drug/alcohol testing.
