First (Days)Overview:
The Clinical Nurse Specialist will work alongside the Cardiac ICU and Advanced Heart Failure unit managers to lead quality initiatives develop and implement evidencebased improvement projects and support the direct care nurses with education and justintime training. The CNS also provides direct patient consulting through many avenues on the unit which includes interdisciplinary rounds direct care nurse support and direct specialty patient education and care. The role relies on expertise with patient specialties including Critical Care Left Ventricular Assist Devices Heart Transplantation Pulmonary Hypertension.
The Sentara Heart Hospitala 112bed care facility is #2 for Cardiology services and Heart Surgery in the State of Virginia and ranks #24 in the nation for best heart programs.
Cardiac ICU (CICU):
- 10 beds on the 2nd floor.
- Patient population: cardiac nonsurgical cases pulmonary hypertension heart attack heart failure sepsis shock and other ICUlevel care needs.
- CICU nurses are part of the Medical Response Team for the hospital.
Advanced Heart Failure Unit:
- 24 bed Specialty Unit that provides high acuity cardiac care to patients with severe heart failure pre/post heart transplant the Total Artificial Heart and pulmonary hypertension.
- Work with high tech equipment such as mechanical circulatory support including ventricular assist devices (LVAD BiVAD) and telemetry monitors.
- Environment relies on 24 hours consistent communication and intricate interdisciplinary teamwork skills.
- Nurses handle 34 patients on this unit based on acuity level.

Certification/Licensure:
Virginia RN License Virginia or Compact/MultiState Eligible.
All Direct Care RNs required to have BLS within 90 days of hire.
Critical Care/IMCU ACLS within 1 year of hire
Experience:
Position requires 2 years of RN experience
