Job Description

Cornell University is committed to increasing the enrollment of military veterans in our undergraduate programs and to enhancing the support available to our student veterans to help them thrive at Cornell. As the Undergraduate Student Veteran Program Director you will play a critical role in building these supports with a dynamic team of colleagues from offices across the university. You will have an immediate and direct impact on our undergraduate student veteran population providing comprehensive advising overseeing student veteran educational programming and creating community among student veterans. The Undergraduate Student Veteran Program Director reports to the Executive Director for Academic Student Success Programs.

The Opportunity

The Undergraduate Student Veteran Program Director in collaboration with the Executive Director of Academic Student Success Programs and campus stakeholders is responsible for assisting with and implementing the vision goals and objectives related to undergraduate student veterans services and programs. In this role you will provide programming and recognition activities for the broader student veteran and militaryconnected community as well as informing campus leaders on policies practices to support the student veteran community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the main point of contact for undergraduate veteran students including those enrolled as active military and military reservists assisting them with their transition to navigation of and graduation from Cornell
  • Assist student veterans in obtaining educational financial social services and other benefits available through federal state and local legislation
  • Advocate for veteran students providing programming referrals and access to information and campus resources
  • Provide input to campus colleagues on the creation and use of policies and procedures to support the Cornell University military and veterans community
  • Assemble and lead a campuswide student veterans resource group providing training updates and resources for colleagues to effectively support veteran students
  • Establish and maintain relationships with student veteran resource partners both internally and externally to build community and foster a sense of belonging for student veterans on campus
  • Develop implement and oversee student veteran educational programs such as the Veteran Summer Bridge Program and Veterans Seminar providing programmatic support tailored to veteran student needs
  • Review and evaluate the effectiveness of support programs and advising for veterans making recommendations to optimize and enhance existing support and proposing new initiatives
  • Work with student groups advising various student veteran organizations and coordinating recognition and appreciation events for veterans

The Undergraduate Student Veteran Program Director will be a creative thinker independent worker and nimble networker who is skilled at building relationships across units and with a variety of stakeholders in support of the success of our student veterans. This position requires evening and weekend hours and accessibility as student needs arise. This is an extraordinary opportunity to be an innovator at Cornell as you create resources build and strengthen networks and maintain and establish programs for our undergraduate student veterans.

This position is located in Ithaca NY and it is fully onsite.

What We Will Need

For full consideration applicants must include both a resume and cover letter with their application.

  • Bachelors degree in education training counseling or a relevant field with at least 3 years of experience in student support initiatives in higher education or a similar setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Familiarity with the US Armed Forces VA education benefits VA services and/or advising student veterans
  • Knowledge of military and veteran student trends educational benefits for veterans resources for veterans and the transition from the military to higher education
  • Strong interpersonal analytical data analysis critical thinking professional judgment and oral and written communication skills
  • Selfdirected and selfmotivated individual capable of working autonomously with minimal supervision while managing multiple situations
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks follow through meet deadlines and make professional decisions
  • Ability to work independently collaboratively across multiple offices and in a team environment
  • Flexibility and accessibility particularly in responding to and attending to student needs
  • Demonstrated work ethic that reflects integrity ethics sound professional judgment and an appreciation for diversity equity and inclusion
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with good judgment and discretion
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students faculty staff and community members.

  • Masters degree
  • 5 years experience in a collegiate veterans services office Student Affairs Social Work or a related field.
  • Experience supervising employees particularly student employees and work study students including hiring and evaluation.
  • U.S. Armed Forces veteran or previous work with Military Services.
