Description

The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilitiesis seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Corrosion Technician. The incumbent will perform skilled inspections and maintenance assist with measuring corrosion levels of gas pipelines by cathodic levels and arrange for corrective action.


This position is considered an Essential Personnel which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies critical or hazardous conditions or inclement weather.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Monitoring test station readings and rectifiers performing inspections and checking for leaks and abnormal operating conditions;
  • Assisting with the developing and maintaining a systemic program for monitoring pipeline corrosion;
  • Locating underground services and estimating system requirements;
  • Operating mechanical and hydraulic equipment and maintaining appropriate visual inspection records;
  • Scheduling and maintaining appropriate job records analyzing and evaluating collected data to determine corrective actions;
  • Use compliance software and GIS to complete surveys for different types of corrosion inspections.

Qualifications Special Certifications and Licenses

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of corrosion software/essentials corrosion control methods and box/utility locators. Ability to read road maps and utilize GIS maps. Considerable skills in analyzing software collecting organizing interpreting and evaluating data and maintaining detailed records. Knowledge of Federal State and City regulations (e.g. CFR 192) and City O&M manual. Proficient in computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel Outlook). Basic math skills. Ability to locate underground gas services/mains. Practical verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to prioritize make sound judgments and multitask while following standard operating procedures. Demonstrated abilities with listening actively solving complex problems thinking critically and deciding the best way to address a problem recognizing issues and proactively troubleshooting the identified problem and understanding the steps required for problem resolutions and workarounds.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience related to utilities maintenance or repair may include specialized vocational training.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.

LICENSING CERTIFICATIONS and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Drivers License within 30 days of hire
  • Must obtain a Basic Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course certification or equivalent within two years after hire

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • One (1) year of experience monitoring and inspecting cathodic protection rectifiers to ensure proper operation and compliance with industry standards;
  • Experience working with gas distribution systems;
  • Experience using volt meters;
  • Experience with data collection and record keeping;
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Excel and Access.
  • Possess an Associates degree vocational technical degree or specialized training equivalent to the satisfactory completion of two years of a college education.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to balance stoop kneel crouch crawl reach stand walk push objects pull objects lift use fingers and grasp objects. The working conditions may include exposure to noise dust grease smoke fumes gases and potentially hazardous chemicals hazardous physical conditions and extreme temperatures. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties this classification is considered to be medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
