Job Description Summary:

Under direct supervision the Comprehensive Planning Trainee performs various duties to support the Comprehensive Planning program and gain experience in long range land use planning and community engagement through projects that implement the Boulder Valley Comprehensive Plan.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts research and prepares summaries of various planning concepts.
  • Produces documents using Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite (mainly InDesign and Illustrator).
  • Supports GISbased analysis and map production.
  • Assists in creating and updating planning databases and reports.
  • Uses graphic design to convey planning concepts to community members and policy makers.
  • Communicates verbally answers planning questions and explains planning concepts to community members.
  • Assists with and participates in community meetings.
  • Supports preparation of staff memos and presentations.
  • Attends staff meetings and training events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to be a selfstarter and take ownership of project deliverables.
  • Ability to be flexible and ask for guidance when needed.
  • Ability to complete work in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong notetaking and writing skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of and ability interest and desire to communicate courteously and effectively with the public and city staff and to provide excellent customer service both in person and over the telephone.
  • Knowledge of urban planning land use and zoning principles.
  • Skill in utilizing Teams email/communication/meeting software.
  • Skill with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Valid Drivers License and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information including criminal conviction history.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of community outreach and engagement of stakeholders.
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in planning landscape architecture environmental design architecture urban design or a related field.
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS or ArcUrban.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Current student or some education in planning landscape architecture environmental design architecture urban design or a related field.
  • Experience is not required.

SUPERVISION

Supervision Received: Comprehensive Planning Senior Manager

Supervision Exercised: None

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical and Mental Effort: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office personal mobility and physical reflexes which permits the employee to work in an office setting. Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard.
  • Work Environment: The position is hybrid with two (2) days/week required inperson in central Boulder.
  • Machines and Equipment Used: Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers and copy/fax machines.
