Job Description

Job Goal:To develop and coordinate educational media services and assist teachers and students in the effective use of the media center and information technology as a learning resource to support the schools curriculum and to develop students information Library skills.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum of a B.S. Degree
  2. Alabama State Department of Education Teaching Certificate
  3. Library Media Specialist Certification

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Supervisor(s):Principal or Appropriate Supervisor

Background CheckRequired:(Ala. Code 1622A5) Upon offer of employment employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Background checks must not be more than 10 years old.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of content curriculum methods materials and equipment needed for the different departments in the school setting.
  2. Knowledge of materials and equipment appropriate for effective teaching and learning.
  3. Knowledge of schools program of studies related to mission goals and organization.
  4. Ability to apply knowledge of current research technology and theory to the library facility.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students parents colleagues and community members.
  6. Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  7. Ability to use and manage technology including but not limited to email internet Microsoft Office Programs CDROMS DVDS videos etc.
  8. Knowledge and understanding of the school system rules administrative procedures local board policy and state and federal rules and regulations.
  9. Possesses the physical and emotional ability to fulfill the contract period.

Essential Functions

  1. Responsible for the operation and supervision of the school media center.
  2. Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.
  3. Coordinates library skills instruction with classroom instruction and works to achieve state curriculum content standards and district educational goals and objectives and collaborates with teachers to integrate information literacy competencies across the curricular.
  4. Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials and makes media center materials available to supplement the instructional program.
  5. Evaluates selects and requisitions new media center materials and informs teachers and other staff of new acquisitions.
  6. Assists students in the use of various types of materials and information technology.
  7. Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skills in the use of reference material in relation to planned assignments.
  8. Presents and discusses materials with a class studying a particular topic at the request of the teacher.
  9. Prepares and administers the media center budget.
  10. Supervises the clerical activities necessary for the effective operation of the media center.
  11. Supervises the work performance of the media aide.
  12. Promotes relationships with external information sources and participates in electronic networks and resource sharing systems to expand the medias center capacity to access information globally.
  13. Establishes and maintains a professional level of rapport with other teachers team leaders department heads districtlevel coordinators and/or program directors and instructional support and service employees of the school district.
  14. Fulfills professional responsibilities beyond those exhibited in the classroom to include participation in school cocurricular programs school and district program improvement efforts participation in community and parent groups and abides by and promotes high ethical standards.
  15. Models appropriate personal characteristics and work habits that are consistent with personal development goals established for students.
  16. Performs other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned.
  • This position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by transfer of a qualified applicant who is already employed by Madison City Schools.
  • Under the Students First Act of 2011 no credit toward tenure or nonprobationary status is earned in the initial school year of employment if the date of hire occurs after September 30.

Expected Employment:187 days (full year)

Evaluation:According to established Board policies and administrative procedures and guidelines

Salary Range:According to Madison City Schools Salary Schedule (Salary based on employment for complete year)
