The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is seeking to fill a Supervisory Fisheries Biologist vacancy in the Jonesboro area.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is housed within the Fisheries Management Section and works out of the Jonesboro headquarters serving Region C the Grand Lake Region. This is professional services and scientific work at the supervisory level involving management of the States inland fisheries by protecting preserving and enhancing Maines natural resources. Responsibilities include planning coordination implementation and supervision of the regional work program and implementation of statewide work programs. This position is the lead of a threeperson team and reports to the Fisheries Management Section Supervisor in carrying out departmental goals and objectives. The scope of work is broad with varying levels of complexity. Work is performed under limited supervision outside in all weather conditions and periodically during nights and weekends.

The position responsibilities include the following tasks:

  • Oversees implements and administers complex regional and statewide work programs.
  • Oversees and directs freshwater fisheries management goals and objectives within the region.
  • Evaluates and analyzes collected data formulates conclusions and writes scientific reports.
  • Performs program support activities to plan prioritize and implement work plans contracts regulation changes stocking allocations etc.
  • Develops coordinates and implements applied management projects from conceptualization to implementation of results.
  • Develops new techniques and programs for effective resource management.
  • Represents the department through attendance at various citizen organizations regional and statewide meetings.
  • Provides direct supervision of State employees who conduct biological studies research and field reviews.
  • Supervises trains and evaluates the work performance of professional and technical staff members.

Preference will be given to candidates that successfully demonstrate:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to work collaboratively.
  • Experience successfully leading projects and managing teams.
  • Experience sampling fish populations through a variety of methods.
  • Experience working with members of the public on freshwater fisheries issues.
  • Ability to chair and facilitate committee meetings and stakeholder work groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelors Degree in Biology Fisheries or Wildlife Management or related field AND two (2) years of progressively responsible related laboratory or field research and/or management experience. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a yearforyear basis.
