Job Description

Job Title: Speech Language Pathology Assistant

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Department: Assigned Campus(es)

Reports To: Speech Language Pathologist

Approved By: Board of Trustees

SUMMARY:

Assist speech language pathologist in planning and providing speech language pathology services to students with speech voice or language disorders. Assist in the preparation and management of speech related classroom activities and administrative requirements. Work under the supervision of a speech language pathologist.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelors Degree

EXPERIENCE:

Some experience working with children

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS:

Certification as required by the Texas Education Agency

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Knowledge of and ability to use wheelchair lift ramps personal computer copier typewriter and audiovisual equipment
  • Working knowledge of copier personal computer typewriter and audiovisual equipment
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students staff and the school community
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Support

  1. Help speech language pathologist prepare speech related instructional materials and classroom displays.
  2. Help with inventory care and maintenance of equipment.
  3. Help speech language pathologist keep administrative records and prepare required reports.

Student Management

  1. Help manage behavior of students. This includes interviewing in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior.
  2. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each students special medical physical communicative and emotional needs.
  3. Work with individual students or small groups and conduct instructional exercises assigned by speech therapist.
  4. Help supervise students while working with students.
  5. Keep teacher and speech language pathologist informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

Other

  1. Maintain confidentiality.
  2. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  3. Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned.
  4. Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work meetings and appointments.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in onetoone and small group situations to administrators teachers peers students parents and the school community.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand walk sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls and climb or balance. Moderate stooping bending kneeling crouching crawling and lifting is required of this employee. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and peripheral vision. The employee needs to be able to tell where a sound is coming from and hear in a noisy environment.

The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud at a standard acceptable level for this environment. The employee is frequently exposed to infection at a greater risk than the average person.
