Job Description

Salem City Schools is searching for an OneYearOnly English Learner Teacher for theschool year.

The English as a Second Language PreK12 endorsement is required however questions about adding the endorsement through Praxis testing can be directed to Dr. Megan Crew Coordinator of State and Federal Programs.

TEACHER

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs difficult professional work providing teaching services in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects assisting students to develop knowledge as a foundation for future learning in accordance with each students ability motivating students to develop skill in assigned subject matters; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the school principal and/or coordinator. This is an exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees holding exempt positions often are required to follow a flexible work schedule which may include working extended hours to meet specific job responsibilities. The contracted salary covers all hours worked.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally up to 10 pounds of force frequently and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping kneeling reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Some teaching specialties (i.e. music art physical education etc.) may require hearing vision physical coordination and/or exertion and effort in excess of those listed above.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Establishing a flexible school instructional program and class environment favorable to learning; teaching a broad range of subjects or specialized subject matter(s) motivating students to achieve maximum potential. The teacher also..

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials based on needs and abilities of students;
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences;
  • Integrates subject area content and technology;
  • Instructs students in subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district;
  • Establishes and maintains standards of behavior;
  • Adapts teaching materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students;
  • Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions;
  • Encourages students to think independently develop and express original ideas;
  • Evaluates students progress maintains appropriate records prepares progress reports;
  • Communicates with students school counselors and parents through conferences and other means;
  • Maintains professional competence through inservice education and selfselected professional books and instructional materials;
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials;
  • Participates in curriculum development programs faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required;
  • Serves on related committees such as child study individual education plan meetings or response to intervention;
  • Attends Parent Teacher Association meetings;
  • Identifies student needs; assists with assessment of needs;
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with established procedures;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of education principles practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff students and parents; knowledgeable of instructional technologies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university. Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s) certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
