Job Description

Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) a rural college serving vibrant culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for a Resident Advisor in the colleges TRIO Upward Bound Department.


The TRIO Upward Bound program is a federally funded grant from the U.S. Department of Education for $581576 which covers 100% of the program costs. This yearround program provides academic support college preparation career awareness and other support services to lowincome and potential firstgeneration college students. It is designed to help students become more successful in high school and prepare to enter and successfully complete postsecondary education. The program works with the following four target high schools within Central Washington: Moses Lake Warden Othello and Royal High School.

For six weeks TRIO Upward Bound operates anintensive residential summer academy for 42 students on the BBCC campus. Students participate in high school or college classes during the day and tutoring sessions during the evening including organized recreation and enrichment activities. The program also offers day trips tours and weekend field trips designed to promote personal and social growth.

This position offers a pay rate of $17.00 per hour and runs for 42 program days from June 20 to August 9 2025 with a typical schedule of 8 or more hours per day. The position is not eligible for benefits but is eligible for overtime. Full availability for the duration of the program along with flexibility to work additional hours as needed is required.

Essential Job Duties

Under the supervision of the Residence Hall Director & Recreation Coordinator the Resident Advisor will:

  • Live in the residence hall on a rotating schedule and assist in supervising students and enforcing program rules.
  • Exemplify a positive and mature role model for the TRIO Upward Bound students.
  • Provide academic tutoring and personal guidance and mentorship to students.
  • Provide individual and small group supervision at all onandoff campus activities.
  • Work 5 days a week (including two weekends); daily work schedule will vary based on program needs.
  • Assist in planning and leading evening and weekend recreation activities.
  • Drive a college van as required for program activities.
  • Maintain weekly written student progress reports and other related documentation.
  • Perform residence hall office duties.
  • Participate in daily hall staff meetings and maintain confidentiality.
  • Participate in a weeklong residence hall staff training prior to students arrival.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two years of college completed after high school graduation (if you participated in Running Start those years do not count since they happened before high school graduation).
  • Valid drivers license and proof of automobile insurance.
  • Sensitive to the backgrounds of culturally diverse high school students.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and organizational skills.
  • Creative and selfmotivated individual with demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and conflicting demands & priorities.
  • Employment is contingent upon favorable background check through the Washington State Patrol.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Residence life experience.
  • Experience working with teenagers and/or disadvantaged populations.
  • Bilingual fluency especially in Spanish.
  • Demonstrated bicultural experience.
If selected for an interview the following are required:
  • A current drivers abstract (may be obtained from the Dept. of Licensing$13 fee)
  • Drivers license and proof of car insurance verifying coverage to drive another persons vehicle
  • Sign a background check through Washington State Patrol
