Job Description

Employment Opportunity: Mikmaq Language & Culture Coordinator
Location: Halifax NS
Salary Range: $70000 annual salary
Employment Term: May 2025March 31 2026 (possibility of renewal) Fulltime hours 35 hours per week. Possibility of evening and weekend work.
Reports To: Programs Manager
General Description:
The Mikmaw Native Friendship Centre is centrally located in the urban Indigenous community of Halifax/Kjipuktuk and is looking for One (1) Mikmaq Language & Culture Coordinator. We are looking for an individual with a passion for Mikmaq culture tradition and language that can work with Elders community members staff and external organizations to bring cultural programming to life. The Mikmaq Language & Culture Coordinator plays a key part in preserving and promoting Mikmaq language and culture through the design and coordination of programs and events that connect with community members and partners alike.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate language classes and cultural workshops using internal and external resources serving as the primary point of contact
  • Develop and sustain strong collaborative relationships with schools community partners external organizations and internal team members
  • Contribute innovative ideas and implement effective processes standards and tools to enhance efficiency accuracy and overall program quality
  • Maintain monthly work plan and monitor the activities outputs and timelines
  • Designing and preparing program content
  • Create and distribute Mikmaq language resources
  • Coordinate a schedule and plan for Mikmaq language classes in tandem with the Mikmaq language instructors
  • Promote Mikmaq language classes and organize each cohort of learners
  • Prepare monthly and annual reports
  • Oversee and manage annual budget
  • Ensure accurate and up to date entries within the MNFC internal database
  • May perform other related duties as required
Qualifications & Experience;

  • Comprehensive knowledge and lived experience of Mikmaq culture ceremonies and traditional practices.
  • Experience organizing communitybased events and programming.
  • Experience managing a budget
  • Excellent communicator both spoken and written
  • Strong organizational and timemanagement skills
  • Thrives working both independently and collaboratively; Takes initiative and can adapt programming to meet the unique needs of a variety of MNFC programs and services.
  • Dependable and consistently works to uphold MNFC ethics and standards
  • This position is designated for people of indigenous ancestry please self identify
