This position is open to all Applicants.


The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Fairbanks!

What you will be doing:
This permanent seasonal position (typically funded for 34 months annually between MayAugust) will assist with multiple stocking and research projects conducted throughout Interior Alaska.
Under general supervision duties will include but are not limited to:
  • Prepare and maintain field equipment including boats motors and small engines and sampling gear including nets and limnology equipment.
  • Participate in all aspects of field research including data collection and setting up and maintaining field camps.
  • Capture fish using various sampling methods. Record data such as tag numbers lengths and capture locations.
  • Collect physical and chemical data on specified water bodies using limnology equipment depth finders and GPSs.
  • Operate field equipment such as highway vehicles with a boat trailer boats with outboard motors ATVs generators and pump.
  • Prepare and maintain stocking equipment and assist with transporting and stocking live fish via highway vehicles ATVs and boats.
  • Review and enter biological/limnological data.

The incumbent will be part of the Region 3 stocked fisheries team that implements research projects that help managers make decisions that sustain or improve the states sport fisheries for all stakeholders. The incumbent will also be involved with fisheries enhancement by assisting Region 3 staff with egg takes and fish stockings.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is in Fairbanks and is typically active May through August. The incumbent will be responsible for preparing and maintaining sampling and stocking equipment and assisting with field research egg takes and stockings. Field duty durations range from day trips to and from Fairbanks to multiday overnight trips to remote locations typically lasting up to 7 days at a time. Food and camping equipment/lodging will be provided for field projects. The incumbent will need to make their own arrangements for food and lodging otherwise. Fairbanks ADF&G does not have a bunkhouse. Requires frequent travel within the State (normally 510 trips of up to 7 days occurring annually).

Who we are looking for:
  • Experience in collecting and entering biological data.
  • Experience in safely operating small boats ATVs power tools and other field and research equipment.
  • Knowledge of Alaskas freshwater and anadromous fish species (including stocked fish species) and local sport fisheries.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in remote settings and withstand inclement weather and abundant insects.
  • Ability to work independently and in small groups (23 people).

Special Note:

  • A valid drivers license is required.

  • This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.

  • First Aid/CPR certification. Training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory.

Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.

A misdemeanor crime of domestic violence is an offense that is (1) a misdemeanor under Federal or state law; and (2) has as an element the use or attempted use of physical force or the threatened use of a deadly weapon committed by a current or former spouse parent or guardian of the victim by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse parent or guardian or by a person similarly situated to a spouse parent or guardian of the victim.
