Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE:


The position of the American Sign Language Interpreter provides sign language translation transliteration and further explanation of educational concepts introduce by the educational staff and team and facilitate communication and hearing access to students with hearing loss within the Bellevue School District school settings. The sign language interpreter is directly responsible to both the audiology and special education departments.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

Work closely with the District Teacher of the Hearing Impaired and District Audiologist classroom teacher and student to facilitate communication and provide educational access between deaf and hard of hearing students and hearing staff students and families.
Provide ASL interpretation services and assistance to hard of hearing students inclusive of conveying teacher instruction and intent.
Under the direction of the Teacher of the Hearing Impaired and general education teacher serve as a resource when planning reviewing or sharing student learning data to inform instructional needs.
Assist the teacher(s) in the provision of IEP or 504 Plan accommodations for general education access and reinforcing curricular content under the supervision of the classroom teacher and the Teacher of the Hearing Impaired.
Assist hard of hearing students with educational skills sign language skills including use of technology as indicated per student need.
Interpret for special events of the school such as assemblies and field trips.
Collect data on student learning as appropriate for the assignment or as requested by the case manager or teachers.
Must maintain certification as required by the State of Washington.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:


Reports directly to and is supervised by building and special education department administration receives direction from assigned certificated audiology and teaching staff

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

Required:

The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) sets performance standards for educational interpreters for the Deaf. Employees must maintain certification as required by the State of Washington. Currently certification can be met through one of the two available options:
Minimum of 4.0 on Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) and passing score on EIPA written assessment OR
National Interpreter Certificate (NIC) from the Registry of Interpreters for the D/HH (RID) and passing score on EIPA written assessment.

Ability to follow written and verbal directions and take initiative to seek clarity when needed.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Encourage and foster student learning independence in all settings when indicated.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting finger dexterity grasping talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts odors chemicals extreme temperatures inadequate lighting workspace restrictions and intense noises.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

CTSA salary classification level6 (nonexempt) starting at $41.89/hour($ 61997.20 annualized for 40 hours per week for a 185day annual assignment). Medical dental vision longterm disability and lifeinsurance eligibility is based upon 630 hours worked within a school year. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement benefits include vacation and paid holidays paid out on a prorated basis.
