Job Description

PARTTIME MUSEUM EDUCATION ASSISTANT

DEPARTMENT: Community and Economic Development

DIVISION: Union Station

Rate of pay: $14.00 per hour between 1020 hours per week.

JOB SUMMARY

The Museums at Union Station preserve and share the history of Utah railroading the history of Ogden and the cultural heritage and legacy of everyone who has come through or lived in Ogden. We are seeking a Museum Education Assistant to assist in the planning and execution of educational programs under the direction of the Museum Administrator. This role will seek to engage preK k12 and adult learners in a wide variety of programs and educational activities using sound educational principles and best practices. This role will interact with the public in both digital initiatives and inperson programs. The Education Assistant will explore the Museums collections for material and work with the museum team to assist in the design and facilitation of programs that are relevant to schools families and the community in Ogden. Programs may include MUS Live adult learning activities Ogden Kids Create learning via the Urban Archive app exhibition interpretation field trips and nonsynchronous student learning initiatives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Lead tours for preK k12 and adult learners using museum exhibits collections relevant stories and effective educational strategies.
  • Respond to student behaviors effectively and appropriately using effective classroom management techniques.
  • Assist in the development and expansion of K12 offerings and teacher support materials.
  • Research numerous history subject topics using museum collection items and outside primary and secondary sources.
  • Work independently and collaborate with team members to produce effective and accurate educational materials as assigned and to support the mission and goals of the museum. This may include guides selfguided tours app experiences web materials and shareable lesson plans.
  • Identify relevant stories and themes and write engaging lesson plans and public program plans using current education and museum interpretation standards for museum use.
  • Support design of onsite signage and collateral experiences.
  • Work with the public and museum staff to schedule and arrange logistics of preschool K12 and adult tour groups with responsive customer service.
  • Support the expansion of volunteer docent program and educational training as needed.
  • Understand support and share the Museums at Union Stations mission and vision
  • Assist in other museum activities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in education or pedagogical techniques is highly preferred
  • Proven interest in public history and interpreting history for a general audience
  • Superb written communication skills with experience writing in an engaging style
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with internal partners and external stakeholders
  • Strong ability to work and collaborate with a team
  • Strong project management skills with a high level of organization and attention to detail

The Education Assistant will work between 1020 hours per week. The Museums at Union Station provide a flexible work schedule to accommodate academic and work commitments.


WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is primarily indoors and occasionally outdoors which may expose the employee to moderate to very loud noises wet or humid conditions moving mechanical parts high and places outdoor weather conditions extreme heat risk of electrical shock and vibrations.
  • Must be able to lift approximately 30 lbs.
  • Must possess the visual ability to see clearly at close (less than 20 inches) and far (20 feet or more) distances identify and distinguish colors observe an area that can be seen up and down or the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point judge distances and spatial relationships and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
  • Additionally the following physical abilities are required: standing walking sitting using hands and fingers to handle or feel reaching with hands and arms talking hearing and smelling.

CRIMINAL HISTORY BACKGROUD CHECK

Successful applicant must pass background check.


DRIVER LICENSE REPORT (MVR)

Driver license report (MVR) will be obtained by the Human Resources division if applicable.
