The Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe efficient and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the Citys streets supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living working and doing business in New York City. The Divisions responsibilities include planning street design technical analysis signs transit development freight mobility and markings ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants pedestrians and cyclists.
Research Implementation and Safety (RIS) is a subdivision that identifies plans and implements annual street improvement projects and programs throughout New York City all focused on improving safety through programs such as Vision Zero Safe Streets for Seniors High Pedestrian Crash Locations and Neighborhood Slow Zones. The School Safety unit is responsible for improving safety near K12 schools throughout New York City. The group focuses primarily on pedestrian safety accessibility and the development of projects that encourage nonmotorized transportation near schools.
School Safety is seeking an ambitious and motivated candidate for a College Aide position. This candidate will learn new skills for project development project management and implementation for street improvement projects and capital projects by assisting School Safety project managers with numerous tasks including but not limited to: analyzing crash data and traffic data; conducting site visits; taking photos and observing behavior at project locations; providing project recommendations to project managers based on analysis; creating GIS maps AutoCAD drawings and Adobe Illustrator schematics; assisting with content for reports and presentations; assisting in community outreach and staffing public events.
Student candidates will have an opportunity to be introduced to transportation planning project initiation project management traffic analysis construction management street safety and urban design concepts AutoCAD and community outreach. The ideal candidates should be detail oriented accurate a capable team player and possess excellent communication skills. This is an opportunity to work with a team dedicated to improving safety accessibility and mobility throughout New York City.
Preferred Skills
Preferred candidate will be familiar with Microsoft Word Power Point Excel AutoCAD Adobe Creative Suite and interested in street design urban planning community outreach.
Hours/Shift: 17 hours/week during school ; 35 hours/week when on break

Qualifications :
For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology computer science management information systems data processing or closely related field including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology computer science management information systems data processing or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than halftime in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed fulltime during their vacation periods.
