Background to the programme
Sixweek National NIHRfunded internship sitting within the Biostatistics Evidence Synthesis Test Evaluation and prediction Models Team (BESTEAM) in the Department of Applied Health Sciences. The internship will be inperson and the successful applicant will be based on campus at the University of Birmingham.
We are looking for a selfmotivated individual eager to explore how systematic reviews contribute to health research. There will be a chance for the successful individual to work on at least one systematic review project potentially across different stages of the review process. There will also be the opportunity for the intern to learn about the evaluation of diagnostic tests. Knowledge of systematic reviews is not a requirement for the role and more information on this type of research can be found here: VIDEO: What are systematic reviews Cochrane; 8 Assessing all the relevant reliable evidence EN Testing Treatments interactive.
In addition to gaining handson experience with review methodology the intern will be exposed to broader aspects of health research. This may include attending team meetings and academic seminars contributing to manuscript preparation learning about patient and public involvement (PPI) in research and observing teachingrelated activities.
Supervision and support will be provided throughout the placement with regular progress meetings and clear learning goals to ensure a productive and enriching experience.
The internship is expected to run between late June and early August 2025. However there is the potential for some flexibility in the scheduling and we are happy to discuss alternative arrangements with the successful applicant (for example splitting the placement into separate four and twoweek blocks if necessary).
