About the Role:
CASA Mental Health Classrooms are CASAs new model for schoolbased mental health service. The program addresses the need for services closer to students by bridging a childs mental health and school needs through a coordinated approach by a mental health team and a teacher. CASA Classrooms are delivered in partnership with the Government of Alberta community partners and school divisions. This role follows the school year schedule running from August to June.

The Mental Health Nurse will:
  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to provide and coordinate services such as nursing assessments plans of care medication administration teaching telephone followup and health promotion.
  • Complete appropriate nursing assessments (physical and psychosocial) to identify mental health concerns and current risks. This includes:
    • Incorporating objective findings such as laboratory results diagnostic findings specialist reports and past history.
    • Integrating assessment and other data to establish appropriate long and shortterm goals and providing nursing interventions to promote maintain and restore health.
  • Monitor evaluate and modify nursing care plans based on effectiveness of interventions and/or changes in condition or environment in collaboration with the patient and care team.
  • Provide information and instructions to assist others in understanding the clinical condition ongoing care and management.
  • Provide relevant medication teaching.
  • Assist with individual or group therapy.
  • Liaise with other professionals to promote continuity of care and assists families with connecting to a primary care physician.
  • Act as a resource by providing training to team members to assist in their professional development and participating in the development of childrens mental health teaching and resource materials.
  • Identify service delivery improvements and suggest enhancements with the lens of evidenceinformed practice and CASAs strategic and operational plans.
  • Regularly work with the team Program Managerand Senior Clinical Operations Manager to gather information and implement any required improvements to clinical processes.
  • Practice according to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific nursing college.
  • Help identify evaluation measures and outcomes in consultation with the ProgramManager.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in nursing.
  • A minimum of three to five years of recent pediatric experience in an ambulatory care setting which has included the care and management of children with mental health problems. Acute care experience in childrens mental health would be an asset.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta.
  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Acts in addition to professional organizations ethics and standards of practice.
  • Respect for and understanding of confidentiality and an ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personal and sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records or similar information systems.
  • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting utilize relevant research findings in daily nursing practice identify barriers and facilitate solution development and to work independently and within a team to prioritize work activities.
  • Commitment to continuous quality improvement and engaging in continuous learning opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Ability to make evidencebased decisions work across programs and services and to work and communicate in a cooperative respective manner with all staff.
  • Knowledge of family therapy and group therapy is an asset.

Conditions of Employment
  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
  • Ability to pass and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) or Supporting Individuals through Valued Attachments (SIVA) training as well asphysical ability to perform all interventions.
  • Valid drivers license and vehicle as travel is required for this position.
