Description

Organization Overview:The Goddard Riverside Community Center (Goddard Riverside) and the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) are wellestablished Manhattan communitybased agencies that support services to approximately 30000 New Yorkers. We are two of New York Citys leading human services organizations meeting the needs of children youth and families homeless individuals and older adults throughout Manhattan and New York City. We work every day for a fair and just society where all people have the opportunity to make choices that lead to better lives for themselves and their families.

Program Description:The Goddard Riverside Law Project provides free legal services and organizing support to lowincome individuals families and groups of tenants in the west side of Manhattan. Our mission is to empower tenants and preserve affordable housing through advocacy legal representation relationship building and grassroots aim to protect tenants rights and hold bad actors accountable while working towards establishing protenant laws and sound housing policy through city and statewide coalition work. To these ends we integrate tenant voices and collaborate with the community particularly SRO tenants and marginalized populations.

Position Summary:Tenant Organizers at the Goddard Riverside Law Project seek to empower and encourage tenants to exercise their rights to dignified and affordable housing and encourage them to develop visions and campaigns for social justice in the realm of housing at the neighborhood level.

Schedule: MondayFriday starting from April 15September 1 mostly afternoonsevenings 48pm)

Salary Range:$57680 $82238 (Based on experience and pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement)

Candidates must have the required qualifications to be considered for the position. The salaryoffer will be basedonthe candidates number of years experience in the exact orcomparableposition and additional preferred qualifications will be taken into account.

Roles Responsibilities and Essential Duties

This position is intended to cover for an employee on a leave of absence. It will be temporary parttime and per diem. We will develop schedules and workplans according to the needs of the Organizing Team. Ideal candidate will be available most afternoons and three evenings a week.

ROLES RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF TENANT ORGANIZERS:

  • Building Outreach: conduct and participate in weekly evening outreach activities to buildings. Preliminary research to identify target buildings. Doorknocking and brief conversations with tenants at their doorsteps.
  • Housing Workshops: conduct research prepare presentations and facilitate workshops on tenants rights and housing issues in the community
  • Tenant Association Organizing: assist organizers in working with groups of tenants in establishing tenant associations fostering their capacity to advocate for improvements in living conditions. Assist with preparations for group litigation or rent strikes
  • Mobilize tenants for demonstrations rallies and forums
  • Attend campaign and coalition meetings as necessary and provide report backs to the Tenant Organizers and Lead Organizer.
  • Administrative tasks: recordkeeping in Powerbase or Legalserver databases phonebanking tenants mailings for advocacy administrative or court proceedings making flyers researching buildings and landlords
  • Work in the evenings 68pm) is required as necessary. Travel to buildings in Harlem Hamilton Heights and Upper West Side is required. Some tasks (reading and research) can be performed remotely with supervisor approval o An individual in this position must be able to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice work.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish preferred.
  • College degree in related area.
  • Familiarity with housing issues and community organizing experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage workload comprising buildingwide organizing and participation in campaigns/coalitions and some casework.
  • Strong writing and research skills.

Computer Skills:

  • To perform this job successfully an individual should be comfortable operating Microsoft Office programs especially Outlook Word and Excel.

Physical Requirements:

  • Most work will be conducted at our office site; in addition work may be required at buildings other offices and outdoors

Work Environment:

  • Office and court settings;
  • Staff attorneys may need to visit clients in their homes and conduct tenant meetings in buildings where the tenants reside.
