Each Career Specialist in The Aspire Center is an integrated member of the campus holistic advising team/model working with faculty student success advisors and other colleagues to provide added support to students in order to support their success during and after Carthage. This specialist will serve as a liaison and build relationships with undeclared students and students exploring new or different majors and serve as their academic advisor while providing career support to our Engineering and Physics students.
In this role the Career Specialist: Undeclared and Engineering Science Students; Academic Advisor will engage in activities like the following:
PROGRAMMING ADVISING AND TEACHING:
Serve as the academic advisor for undecided students by building an academic course schedule that aligns with students interests values and skills and transition them from undeclared status to declaring a major.
Advise engineering and physics students on the full range of career development tasks such as recognizing personal capabilities defining career plans understanding expectations for their field(s) of interest networking with mentors graduate/professional school representatives and employers obtaining experiential learning and securing postgraduate opportunities consistent with their personal and professional development goals. The career specialist will help students explore their interests and sense of purpose balancing professional and personal life goals.
Participate on the Student Success Team to identify current students of concern opportunities for higher impact and trending data and insights.
Coordinate with the Admissions Office to incorporate The Aspire Center into prospective student events.
Supervise about 10 Student Workers known as Career Ambassadors (CAs) who provide peer support for portfolio development outreach for careerrelated programming and office support.
Collaborate with faculty campus partners and Aspire team members to plan design implement and assess formal and informal learning opportunities aligned with The Aspire Program pillars: creativity entrepreneurship leadership and career development.
Facilitate student engagement with their My Aspire Plan (MAP) through coordination of events presentations and site visits etc.
Develop resource materials and tools to help students best navigate their My Aspire Plan (MAP)
Integrate both traditional and contemporary methods and practices of career planning and development.
Collaborate with the Purposeful Life and Leadership Coordinator to link and leverage existing and new leadership opportunities.
Integrate the concepts of creativity resilience and curiosity into annual student experiences and events.
Contribute to campuswide efforts to strengthen students cultural competencies in their community and workplaces.
Promote The Aspire Program to prospective Carthage College students and communicate the program to current students as well as other key audiences.
Act as liaison for prospective students in collaboration with Admissions to answer incoming questions and provide support to those incoming undecided students.
Work with the Internship and Experiential Learning Coordinator to build awareness about on and offcampus experiences that enable students to build skills and networks to gain access to meaningful experiential learning opportunities.
Teach one or more sections of College Success Seminar each fall and teach an Aspirerelated January term course.
Able to work independently and collaboratively on all items and projects. Leverage alumni and employer networks to provide meaningful student experiences.
Safely transport students in a 12 or 15passenger van for occasional site visits ensuring adherence to all traffic laws and safety protocols.
Complete other duties as assigned or as opportunities emerge.
EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Masters degree or equivalent preferred Bachelors degree required.
Preference will be given to applicants with previous academic advising experience
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Ability to work crossgenerationally with a commitment to equity and inclusion
Experience in advising teaching or counseling
Skilled with use of technology including communication tools databases and information management systems.
Possesses effective written and verbal communication skills across mediums.
