Job Description

The State of Montana has a decentralized human resources (HR) system. Each agency is responsible for its own recruitment and selection. Minimum Educational Requirement:

  • Bachelors degree in Public Administration Criminal Justice Sociology Psychology Finance Accounting or a closely related degree with coursework in the criminal justice field from an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Minimum Experience Requirement:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of criminal justice SUI or investigative experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Education or experience within the insurance industry including Life and Health insurance Property and Casualty insurance Producer and claims experience.

*Alternate combinations of education and experience may be considered on a casebycase basis.

Job Overview

The Investigations Bureau of the office of the Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Montana State Auditor (CSI) investigates and enforces the State regulations pertaining to insurance practices throughout Montana. The Bureau plays a major role in maintaining the health and integrity of the insurance industries in Montana. The Bureau is responsible for investigations in allegations of violations of the Montana Insurance Code. This function involves the investigation and prosecution of civil and criminal violations. The Bureau conducts criminal and administrative investigations of theft insurance fraud and other violations related to insurance including workers compensation insurance claims insurance producers and bail bonds.

This position serves as an Investigator with responsibility for planning and administering statewide investigations of alleged illegal insurance activities. Duties include coordinating and conducting statewide fraud investigations and compliance audits; coordinating various aspects of the bureaus programs (e.g. evidence maintenance researching and reporting etc.); and performing other duties as assigned.

What are we looking for

The ideal candidate in this position will have a good understanding of insurance industry practices strategies and terminology and be able to interpret regulations pertaining to insurance and securities practices (e.g. Montana Insurance Code Administrative Rules of Montana etc.). The successful candidate in this position should exhibit an overall understanding of criminal investigation methods criminal justice jurisdiction rules of evidence privacy regulations and criminal procedures conducting investigative interviews report writing giving oral testimony and legal proceedings. Having the knowledge and understanding of accounting and financial auditing (including theoretical/forensic accounting) is also a must.
