Qualifications for this Career Opportunity

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and Montana Safety Culture Act.
  • Knowledge of workers compensation program management.
  • General knowledge of mental health or longterm care facility safety risks and injury prevention.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to consult on safety and conduct safety training.
  • Ability to establish professional working relationships with other agencies in the community such as Department of Labor Montana State Fund Risk Management and Tort Defense law enforcement city officials attorneys as well as department employees and managers at all levels.
  • Ability to multitask prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Skilled in working under stressful situations with the ability to remain calm to make decisions in a timely manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete the essential functions including using spreadsheet word processing database email internet and other computer programs
  • Meet minimum qualifications:
    • Bachelors degree in safety management Occupational Safety and Health or a related field is preferred
    • Two years of experience overseeing workers compensation safety and/or risk management programs is preferred
    • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

This position may be eligible for partial teleworkwithin the state of conditions will be provided by the supervisor and must adhere to state policy.

This position may be eligible for a statutory $1.00 an hour base pay increase effective July 1 2025 and July 1 2026.

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Office of Human Resources.

This position works with the Risk Management and Safety Manager and Safety Officer to administer the agency employee safety risk management and workers compensation programs with the goals of preventing workplace injuries and work compensation claims reducing risk to the agency through effective risk management and loss control programs and assuring that the Department complies with all Federal and State safety laws and regulations. This positions primary focus will be leading the safety programs for the Healthcare Facilities Division (HFD). This position will be responsible for assisting each facility with workers compensation claims management return to work coordination and injury and loss analysis. The incumbent will conduct or facilitate safety training facilitate agency safety committee meetings conduct safety inspections at agency locations and conduct ergonomic assessments and job safety analysis. The position will assist agency employees and management in response to threat reports by conducting threat assessments and managing incidents to reduce risk to employees. The position assist agency programs with emergency preparedness such as developing and maintaining emergency action plans conducting emergency drills and providing training. This position collaborates extensively with the Risk Management and Safety Manager and Safety Officer in promoting a safe workplace for the agencys employees managing workers compensation claims and the Early Return to Work program and is responsible to back up all the Risk Management and Safety Manager and Safety Officers duties. This position reports to the Risk Management and Safety Manager.
