AI Labs is seeking an AI Researcher to help push the frontiers of machine learning and risk modeling at American Express. AI Labs is a machine learning research group within the Global Decision Science (GDS) business unit of Credit and Fraud Risk (CFR).
The AI Researcher will play a critical role in the research and development of novel highimpact modeling approaches which improve credit and risk management. Additionally they will serve as a thought leader who can communicate these ideas and educate technical and nontechnical leaders on their business value across the enterprise. The ideal candidate will have strong background in data science and machine learning proven ability to research novel ML approaches and connect techniques to realworld business problems in actionable ways and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
How will you make an impact in this role
- Be a Curious Researcher: Research and develop new modeling techniques methodologies and paradigms leveraging internal and external insights from academia and industry to identify approaches with strong business outcomes in credit and fraud risk. Establish proofs of concept of novel approaches. Develop new metrics to better capture model differences.
- Be a Thought Leader: Inform and educate peers and leaders across the enterprise on the business benefits of new techniques. Present findings recommendations and results successfully to both technical and nontechnical audiences including executive leadership via clear reports visualizations and presentations.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Establish and maintain close relationships with crossfunctional partners to understand business strategies develop goals and address opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD or Masters degree in Data Science Mathematics Computer Science Statistics Engineering or related STEM field.
- Industry experience is preferred.
- Proven problemsolving skills and research ability leveraging external insights from academia and industry.
- Great communication skills; able to explain methodologies and business impact to both technical and nontechnical peers and leaders including executive leadership.
- Strong fundamental statistical modeling and ML knowledge e.g. regression clustering hypothesis testing GBMs neural networks. Handson experience applying such algorithms to realworld business problems.
- High Proficiency in Python programming is required.
- Strong fundamental deep learning compute background including knowledge of packages such as PyTorch and Tensorflow.
- Knowledge of database tools e.g. SQL BigQuery and familiarity with big data platforms e.g. Hadoop Hive Spark.
- Experience in big data environments including data processing and handling and cloud computing platforms such e.g. Amazon Web Services Google Cloud Platform.
- Strong analytical and conceptual thinking with demonstrated ability of translating complex unstructured business problems into ML modeling problems.
- Proficiency with data visualization and reporting tools e.g. matplotlib seaborn altair
- Proficiency with industry recognized ETL methods processes and standards
- Ability to work independently as well as on a small team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with credit card/installment loan industry
- Familiarity with causal inference reinforcement learning.
