Program Overview Language Programs Community Programs Newcomer Programs & Services has served newcomers and refugees in Toronto for over four decades. Its mandate is to help newcomers and refugees settle adjust and integrate into society. Funded by the three levels of government WoodGreen Newcomer Programs & Services operates English language training programs settlement services employment support programs mentorship networking activities and social and recreational activities. Newcomer Programs & Services is committed to providing friendly and professional services to all newcomers to help them connect with Canadian society and their new way of life.
What You Will Do- Deliver instruction to English language learners in accordance with Canadian Language Benchmarks and performs all duties associated with Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) specific program curriculum and other guidelines set out by WoodGreen and its funders.
- Develop appropriate lesson plans teaching methodologies materials and activities based on the experiences social contexts and life goals of learners and as approved by the Manager of English Language Services. The preparation time is included in the instruction time.
- Respectfully collaborate and cooperate with other staff within WoodGreen to ensure clients success and integration in programming.
- In consultation with the Manager arrange for guest speakers fieldtrips and other computerized/online learning activities to facilitate learning of learners. This planning activity is included in the instruction time.
- Start classes on time and adhere to the scheduled breaks and dismissal time.
- Using PBLA assessment practices and principles evaluate progress of learners on an ongoing basis and promote them to the next level as required.
- Monitor learners attendance follow up with learners who are absent or are at risk of dropping out. Inform Manager if attendance drops.
- Support WoodGreens learner recruitment efforts through providing input encouraging referrals from existing learners and supporting recruitment activities.
- Monitor the settlement needs of learners and links them to WoodGreens services and programs.
- Submit curriculum outlines lesson plans attendance records and statistical and program reports on time. The plan and the preparation of records and reports are included in the instruction time.
- Maintain program resources (e.g. computers instructional materials and books) and ensure they are in good condition.
- Ensure the antiracism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved.
What You Bring to the Team- Bachelors Degree(s) in Teaching Adult Education or Social Science.
- TESL Ontario Certificate; current member in good standing with TESL Ontario.
- Fully trained in Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) an asset.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in teaching English as a Second Language and implementing PBLA.
- Experience using technology and delivering online classes and hybrid models effectively.
- Experience in teaching multilevels in a multicultural environment.

- Demonstrated experience in teaching English language classes to newcomers of multilevels and from diverse backgrounds
- Understanding of antiracism issues and community development principles
- Good computer skills: MS office Internet and knowledge of online learning
- Ability to collaborate with WoodGreens Newcomer Programs and Services teams
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent team skills
- Proven administrative skills: submitting lesson plans attendance records monthly reports as required and on time.
