  • THIS POSITION IS FOR 7 HOURS PER DAY AT 180 DAYS PER YEAR.
    PAY FOR POSITION: PSE Salary Schedule Level $29.26 24/25 Salary Schedule)


    This positions responsibilities are to provide a wide variety of support to the school nurse by providing nursing care as outlined in health care plans maintaining student health records assessing the health needs of students to provide first aid or referrals and assisting in nursing procedures. The LPN provides nursing care under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. Other responsibilities include maintaining computer records and lists securing required health records from parents maintaining health room supplies and providing a variety of clerical support to the school office.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    Depending upon the individual assignment the Clerk LPN Basic Education may perform all or a combination of the following:

    1. Provides nursing care as delegated by school nurse and as outlined in individual health care plans. Nursing care may include nonoral medications (i.e. injections eye/ear medications) mixing medications blood glucose monitoring nasogastric and Jtube feedings suctioning and tracheotomy care feeding and medication by Gtube performing clean intermittent catheterization providing nebulizer treatments and other nursing care appropriate for a LPN. Health care plans are developed and monitored by the school nurse.

    2. Maintains student health records; creates new records; updates health information; ensures that health records are maintained in confidential manner.

    3. May maintain student attendance records; track attendance; verify and process student absence excuses; may maintain and report lunch count; informs administrator school nurse and/or parents of student absences.

    4. Attends to student health needs; assesses injuries or illness to determine appropriate action; provides basic first aid; refers students to health care professionals as needed. Determines need for nurses advice; calls nurse for assistance as necessary; may call for emergency assistance. Calls parents regarding student accidents or illness as needed; arranges for transportation home as necessary.

    5. Gathers assesses and records immunization information; gathers health data for a variety of state reports such as scoliosis immunization vision and hearing. Contacts parents or schools as needed to secure health records and immunization compliance in accordance with district procedures and time lines. Maintains documentation of parental contacts. Prepares forms for reporting purposes.

    6. Compiles health records cards and lists; provides reports as requested. Maintains health room log. Completes accident reports and distributes them appropriately. Compiles updates and distributes health concerns list.

    7. Records health screening results for each student. Is responsible to organizing health screenings. Assists school nurse with screenings may train volunteers to assist with screenings.

    8. Administers medication to students as directed by physician according to district policy procedures and procedures and under the supervision of a registered nurse. Maintains appropriate records.

    9. Maintains inventory of health room supplies; prepares supply orders; receives verifies and stocks supplies.

    10. Monitors student behavior in the health room; corrects behavior as necessary; monitors individual health room use to prevent abuses.

    11. Reports situations such as pregnancy substance abuse or physical abuse to appropriate school staff for followup. Maintains confidentiality of student personal problems.

    12. Attends scheduled health clerk meetings/inservice.
    OTHER FUNCTIONS

    13. May in conjunction with school nurse provide information to parents about health issues.

    14. Provides a variety of clerical support to the school office such as answering telephones filing performing computer input and typing. Provides a variety of backup and peak load assistance and coverage in the school office.

    15. May process student enrollments and withdrawals; sends for and receives student records; maintains student records; may process teacher grade reports.

    16. May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. May provide practicum site for health occupations students; models appropriate and cooperative behavior including protecting confidential information consistent with district ethical guidelines.

    17. Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.


    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
    Reports to assigned program administrator; receives lead guidance from school nurse.

    MENTAL DEMANDS
    Experiences frequent interruptions; required to deal with a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities which may include distraught or difficult students; may be required to deal with distraught or difficult parents. May be required to shift task and priority. Frequently required to deal with situations that could put them in position of liability.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    Record keeping requires substantial visual concentration; exposed to visual display terminals; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; occasionally required to attend to students personal hygiene; required to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids disinfectants and medications. May be required to move ill or injured students.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience
    Education training skills and experience necessary to carry out the assignment including experience maintaining accurate records. LPN license required. Previous experience in health care strongly preferred.

Ability to deal with students in a warm and confident manner. Ability to work effectively as a team member and collaborate in providing services to student. Problemsolving and decisionmaking skills. Ability to organize activities and work independently. Ability to follow and give instructions. Ability to learn and apply a variety of health techniques and procedures. Ability to be fair and consistent when working with students. Ability to screen and treat minor student illnesses and injuries. Ability to evaluate the need for and secure medical attention by trained personnel. Ability to administer medication as directed. Ability to handle crises effectively. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Ability to supervise and correct student behavior. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff students and parents.

    Licenses/Special Requirements
    Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation abuse injury or neglect of a minor. Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan. Requires first aid and CPR certification. HepatitisB immunization offered.
